If I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what would you say? Apsis
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online businesses today, email advertising continues to be Dominated by the identical large players for the last ten years. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and accomplish a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So today, in this review, I’ll be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to find out whether it really stands its ground against the big boys…
…and, what’s more, whether youshould consider making the switch.

Like most email advertising providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information like your company name, site, Business, address, business size, record size and also the type of content you intend to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Site (or domain name).
This remains part of the acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is associated to that domain in order that they could email you a verification link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Measures, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, check your Site, and determine whether you’re a good match for their services.
(In other words, they are making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to use the software to create campaigns and play with the attributes, but you will not have the ability to send anything until accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
But while these steps are not perfect for getting started, it Does help stop unscrupulous users from hurting everybody’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to Deal with The majority of your email marketing.
(We’ll get to automations soon, do not worry.)
But if it is a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always a reason to send a more instant email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Create Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Versions, including subject line, from name and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not start your broadcast email, together with the option of changing the subject line and email articles.
– RSS campaign: Create a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to subscribers using your site’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few additional choices, most of these will follow Exactly the same step-by-step procedure of a normal effort.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click to create your effort, you’ll be requested to Pick a preferred editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can change to the Templates tab and choose from among their pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor .
In the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to select From which is somewhat on the low side, however, the designs are super modern.
And, of course, if you’d just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll select the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Which makes viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the blocks in the sidebar to add different Types of articles to your email, including videos, merchandise columns, and social connections.
After making your changes, just click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ choices where you can select your groups or segments.
The advanced tab also allows one To develop segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting isn’t quite right.
Finally, before sending, you’ll get into the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, if that’s immediately, at a set time/date, or according to your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Apsis
Managing Your Subscribers
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably among The most essential aspects of any email marketing software today.
Because highly personalized efforts are necessary if You’re searching to increase opens, clicks, and, most importantly, your conversions.
And while most providers allow you to”label” readers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different strategy.
When you open up your subscriber dash, you’ll notice two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically rules.
Your readers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified principles, and are automatically inserted or eliminated so.
Here is what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can also blend Rules, as well as an alternate rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for classes, and also the difference in name, These behave much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it)
Unlike Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or through an Automation rule — that we will get into in a moment — and they don’t have any value aside from what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, but MailerLite offers a hand in the event you’re uncertain:
Fundamentally, groups are more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments allow you to bulge multiple subscribers collectively according to a common denominator.
A tad confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. In any case, they’re optional.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their particular fields, such as name, business, and country.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your subscribers along with Your custom field information in distinct columns… or can simply add these fields to a types which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I created and added into a form:
I won’t go too much to the shape Stuff here since I have a whole section on that below, but this is the approach I would recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field information from new Subscribers, you can pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Customized field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it is important to know this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it is reasonable to say MailerLite has their subscriber Direction and personalization features on point. Apsis
If you are not impressed with what you’ve seen so far, then maybe The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Isn’t winning any awards, it will offer a fantastic base to work from if, like most of us, you do not have that natural eye for layout.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, though They ultimately do the same task; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further construct or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and this is already better than some dedicated alternatives *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the basic building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite really offers a Adequate set of form building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there’s a whole lot to cover .
Let us start with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to show it on particular pages.
Despite starting off super basic, the form designer lets you To personalize everything from the kind style, fields, background, title, input fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which gives you a chance To visualize your copy in real time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there is more to a form than just its appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure how the Form works, including adding additional fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There is even a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded form also prevents users from redirecting.
Last but certainly not least, you Can assess the way your form screens on mobile by switching the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes here, but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that is an Summary of the Embedded form but like I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of the setup Procedure is identical, there are A few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth selection, they do provide a good foundation to work from and the editor is just as easy to use with this form type.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template requires me to a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new options under form types This time around:
Contemplating paid tools such as Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to see this level of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can play with the styling options to get it Matched up with your own branding.
Last, you can Select the close Behavior of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
That is where most email Marketing platforms will render you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Statistics in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click info, Subscriber development, automation stats, and form signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you special coverage for that campaign.
This is where you’ll discover some statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary user…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into different areas of this report for a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Mail’ tab also shows a click map, so You can see your readers interacted with your mails compared to another.
Reports for automations are also Available under the’Automations’ tab, even though I found these to be less enlightening than campaign reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and many will get the available data more than enough to meet their needs.
What’s email marketing without a dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The good news? If you’ve used a visual workflow builder, You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and simple to navigate — something that certainly can’t be said for each and every email marketing program.
After setting your trigger, you can begin adding steps to your workflow.
These steps can be anything from sending an email, including a Postpone, a conditional split, or an action, like transferring a subscriber or upgrading their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where readers Are unsubscribed if they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are innumerable Possibilities in regards to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks a number of the conditional elements. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.)
For Instance, there’s currently no automation for transferring Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, the Majority of these actions can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into various groups that trigger new automation workflows. It’s simply not as efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficacy here is when generating new mails In the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email block to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your topic line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the review.
This time, however, as Soon as You’ve established your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you straight back into the automations workflow rather than the usual sending options.
Finally, your email will probably be Loaded into your automation.
A Wonderful touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, which means you can get an idea of what it contains at a glimpse.
While this process may seem like A grind on paper, it’s really much quicker than what I am utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, so you’ll probably find this a downgrade in functionality.
It’s fast enough for me, Personally, however I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s 1 type of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and that I think that it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or measure ) based on the way Readers interact with the pages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting just is not available in MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or intend to use, you may want to skip this one. Apsis
The Price of MailerLite is no doubt among those tools biggest Selling points, and let’s face it, most of us love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All features (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding on your mails using this plan, it’s still an wonderful option for anyone starting out.
And what about the top plans?
It turns out, at approximately half of the Price of this competition on average, MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the least expensive options available on the market. Plus, if you are ready to pay yearly, you can also get an even greater discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to find anything that does exactly the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among the very few marketing tools to disrupt The (very crowded) sector in the last couple of years, and that’s no easy feat.
While it’s not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
All in all, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking of giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you In the comments. Apsis
