When I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what would you say? Createsend
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online businesses today, email marketing has been Dominated by the same big players for the previous decade. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time customers to question their loyalties.

Like most email advertising providers these days, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the software.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information such as your company name, site, Industry, address, business size, list size and even the kind of content you intend to send.
Then, you need to verify your Site (or domain ).
This remains part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to this domain in order that they can email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Measures, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, assess your Site, and ascertain whether you are a good fit for their services.
(Quite simply, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to use the software to create campaigns and perform with the attributes, but you will not be able to send anything before approved.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
But while these steps are not perfect for getting started, it Does help stop unscrupulous users from damaging everybody’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to Deal with Nearly all your email advertising.
(We will get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But whether it’s a brand new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always a reason to send a more instant email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Produce Campaign’ will give you several options.
– Regular effort: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, including subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not open your broadcast email, together with the choice of altering the subject line and email articles.
– RSS campaign: Produce a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to subscribers using your website’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few additional options, most of these will follow The same step-by-step procedure of a standard campaign.
So let us walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your effort, you’ll be requested to Select a favorite editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can switch to the Templates tab and choose from among their pre-designed email templates — that will move you to the dragn’ drop editor by default.
At the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to select From which is somewhat on the low side, but the designs are super modern.
And, of course, if you would just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I will select the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Which makes customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the cubes in the sidebar to include different Kinds of articles to your email, including videos, product columns, and social links.
After making your changes, simply click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be taken to the recipients’ choices where you are able to select your groups or sections.
The tab also allows one To build segment-like rules , in the event your targeting isn’t quite right.
Finally, right before sending, then you’ll get into the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, if that’s immediately, at a set time/date, or according to your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Createsend
Handling Your Clients
Having granular control over your readers is arguably among The most important facets of any email advertising program today.
Because highly personalized campaigns Are Essential if You’re searching to increase clicks, opens, and, above all, your own conversions.
And while many providers Permit You to”tag” readers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you open up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll notice two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically rules.
Your subscribers belong to a segment only when they fulfill the Specified rules, and will be automatically inserted or removed accordingly.
Here’s what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice how you can also combine Rules, in addition to another rule if the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for groups, and also the difference in title, These behave much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are updated manually or through an Automation rule — which we’ll get to in a moment — and they have no value besides what you call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll begin to understand At which Segments and Groups are generally used, but MailerLite offers a hand in the event you’re unsure:
Basically, groups are much more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments allow you to bulge multiple contributors together based on a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I will admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. Besides, they’re discretionary.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their own fields, such as title, company, and country.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your subscribers along with Your custom field data in separate columns… or may simply add these fields to your types which will only apply to prospective readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added into a form:
I will not go too much into the shape Stuff here since I have a whole section on this below, but this is the approach I would recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field data from new Subscribers, you can pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Custom field.
I am barely scratching the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it’s important that you know this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to state MailerLite has their contributor Management and personalization features on point. Createsend
If you are not impressed by what you have seen so far, then perhaps The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you’ll be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Is not winning any awards, but it does offer a great base to work from if, like the majority people, you do not have that pure eye for design.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, though They all ultimately do the same task; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual page builders, and this is already better than a few dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the basic building blocks, you can use elements like Hero segments, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite really offers a Adequate set of type building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there’s a whole lot to cover here.
Let us start with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to display it on particular pages.
Despite beginning super basic, the form designer allows you To personalize everything from the kind style, subjects, background, name, enter fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To visualize your copy in real-time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there’s more to some form than simply its appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure how the Form functions, such as adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There’s even a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded form also prevents users from redirecting.
Last but certainly not least, you Can check how your form displays on mobile by switching the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any design changes , but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of the Embedded form but as I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of this installation process is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive choice, they do offer a good foundation to work from and the editor is at least as easy to use with this form kind.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template requires me into a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new choices under form types Now around:
Contemplating paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to see this level of control over popup forms.
And, like before, you can play the styling options to get it Matched up with your own branding.
Finally, you can Select the near Behaviour of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text option, or have .
That is really where most email Marketing platforms will render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Statistics in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and form signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific coverage for that campaign.
This is where you’ll discover some statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading environment, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary consumer…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into different areas of the report to get a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Mail’ tab also displays a click map, so It’s possible to see your subscribers interacted with your emails in relation to another.
Reports for automations will also be Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, though I found to be less enlightening than campaign reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and most will find the available data more than enough to meet their demands.
What’s email marketing with no dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this review.
The great news? If you’ve used a visual workflow builder, You’ll immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and easy to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for every email advertising program.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding steps to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, including a Postpone, a conditional split, or an act, such as transferring a contributor or upgrading their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed when they do not open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.. )
For Instance, there’s now no automation for moving Subscribers directly into a different automation.
That being said, the Majority of these actions can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into various classes that trigger new automation workflows. It’s just not as efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficiency here is when creating new emails In the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to add your topic line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, however, once you’ve established your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending options.
Ultimately, your email will probably be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, which means it’s possible to get an concept of what it contains at a glimpse.
While this process may seem like A grind on newspaper, it’s really much faster than what I’m utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, so you will likely find that this downgrade in functionality.
It is quick enough for me, Personally, however I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there is one Kind of automation You will not find in MailerLite, also I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or measure ) based on the way Subscribers interact with all the pages on your website.
This kind of behavioral targeting only is not available in MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or plan to use, you might want to skip this one. Createsend
The cost of MailerLite is one of the tools largest Selling points, and let’s face it, most of us love a good deal.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding on your emails using this plan, it is still an wonderful alternative for those starting out.
And what about the top programs?
It ends up, at around half the Price of this competition generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the least expensive options available on the industry. Plus, if you’re ready to pay annually, you can also get an even greater discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to locate anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of those few advertising tools to disrupt The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of years, which is no simple feat.
While it’s not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and all at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking about giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you In the remarks. Createsend
