Intro Email Marketing Best Practices
If I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what could you say? Email Marketing Best Practices
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online businesses today, email advertising has been Dominated by the identical large players for the last decade. Which means that they get encouraged very deeply and accomplish a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So today, in this short article, I will be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it stands its own ground against the big boys…

Like most email advertising providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the software.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information like your organization name, site, Business, address, company size, list size and also the type of material you intend to send.
Then, you need to confirm your Website (or domain ).
This is still part of this acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is associated to this domain in order that they could email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Steps, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, check your Site, and ascertain whether you’re a fantastic match for their services.
(Quite simply, they are making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and perform with the attributes, but you will not be able to send anything before approved.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these steps are not perfect for getting started, it Does help stop malicious users from hurting everyone else’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to handle Nearly all your email advertising.
(We’ll get to automations soon, don’t worry.)
But whether it’s a new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always a reason to send a more instant email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Produce Campaign’ will provide you several choices.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Versions, including subject line, from title and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Don’t start your broadcast email, with the option of altering the subject line and email content.
– RSS campaign: Create a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to subscribers using your site’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few added options, most of these will follow The same step-by-step procedure of a standard campaign.
So let us walk you through it.
Once you click to create your effort, you’ll be requested to Pick a preferred editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can change to the Templates tab and choose from one of the pre-designed email templates — that will move you to the dragn’ drop editor by default.
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to select From which is a little on the low side, but the layouts are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you would just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I will choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to use, Which makes viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the cubes in the sidebar to include different Types of content to your email, such as videos, product columns, and societal connections.
After making your changes, simply click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be taken to the recipients’ options where you can choose your classes or segments.
The tab also allows you To build segment-like rules on-the-fly, in case your targeting is not quite perfect.
Finally, before sending, you’ll get to the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, whether that is immediately, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Email Marketing Best Practices
Handling Your Clients
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably among The most important facets of any email marketing software today.
Because highly personalized campaigns are necessary if You’re searching to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your own conversions.
And while most providers allow you to”tag” subscribers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different strategy.
When you open up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially principles.
Your subscribers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified rules, and will be automatically inserted or removed accordingly.
Here’s what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can even combine Principles, as well as another rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for classes, and also the difference in name, These behave much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but finally decided against it)
Unlike Segments, Groups are updated manually or via an Automation principle — that we will get into in a minute — and they have no value aside from what you call them.
As you Begin to use this stage, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, however, MailerLite offers a hand in case you’re unsure:
Basically, groups are more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple subscribers collectively based on a frequent denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I’ll admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. Besides, they’re optional.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their particular areas, such as name, company, and country.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers along with Your custom field information in separate columns… or may simply add these fields to a types which will only apply to prospective subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I made and added to a form:
I will not go too much into the shape Stuff here because I have a whole section on this below, but this is the approach I would recommend if you wanted to use this attribute.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field information from fresh Subscribers, you can pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Customized field.
I’m barely scratching the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it is important to understand that this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it is reasonable to say MailerLite has their subscriber Management and personalization features on stage. Email Marketing Best Practices
If you are not impressed by what you’ve seen so far, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you’ll be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Is not winning any awards, but it will offer a great foundation to work from if, like the majority of us, you don’t have that natural eye for design.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, though They all ultimately do the identical job; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or change your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual site builders, and it is already better than a few dedicated alternatives *Infection * WPBakery.
Together with the fundamental building blocks, you can use elements like Hero segments, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it will not be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually offers a Adequate set of form building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there is a lot to cover .
Let us begin with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to show it on specific pages.
Despite starting off super fundamental, the form designer allows you To customize everything from the kind style, fields, background, title, enter fields and, of course, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which Provides you a Opportunity To envision your own backup in real time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there’s more to a form than simply its appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure how the Form works, including adding extra fields and setting a custom success page.
(There’s even a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And talking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded kind also prevents users .
Last but surely not least, you Can check how your form displays on cellular by shifting the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t be able to make any design changes here, but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of the Embedded form but like I said before, you can also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of the setup Procedure is identical, you will find Still a few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do provide a good base to work from and the editor is at least as simple to use for this form kind.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me into a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new choices under form types This time around:
Contemplating paid programs like Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this amount of control over popup types.
And, like before, you can perform with the styling options to get it Matched up with your own branding.
Last, you can choose the close Behavior of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text option, or have both.
That is really where most email Marketing platforms will leave you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Data in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click info, Subscriber growth, automation analytics, and form signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you special reporting for this effort.
This is where you’ll discover a few more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading environment, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into individual areas of this report for a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
For example, the’View Mail’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see how your readers interacted to another.
Reports for automations are also Available under the’Automations’ tab, though I found these to be less enlightening than effort reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and most will get the available data more than sufficient to meet their needs.
What is email marketing without a dashboard of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The great news? If you have used a visual workflow builder, You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and simple to navigate — something which certainly can not be said for every email marketing program.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a conditional split, or an action, like moving a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I put together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they don’t open my email within seven days.
There are innumerable Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite ought to not have any trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign since it lacks a number of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.)
For Instance, there’s currently no automation for transferring Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, the Majority of these activities can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into various classes that activate new automation workflows. It’s just much less effective…. yet.
Another question of efficiency here is when generating new emails In the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email block to The workflow, you will be asked to add your topic line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, however, once you’ve established your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you straight back into the automations workflow rather than the usual sending options.
Ultimately, your email will probably be Loaded into your automation.
A nice touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation block, so it’s possible to get an concept of what it contains at a glimpse.
While this process may seem like A grind on paper, it’s really much quicker than what I’m utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, you will likely find this a downgrade in performance.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s 1 Kind of automation You will not find in MailerLite, and I think that it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or measure ) based on the way Readers interact with all the webpages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting just is not accessible MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or intend to use, you may want to skip this one. Email Marketing Best Practices
The Price of MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the tools biggest Selling points, and let’s face it, most of us love a good bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) for up to 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your emails using this program, it’s still an amazing alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium plans?
It ends up, at approximately half of the Cost of the competition on average, MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the cheapest options on the market. Plus, if you are ready to pay annually, you are also able to get an even better discount.
In fact, I haven’t been able to find anything that does exactly the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among those very few email advertising tools The (very crowded) industry in recent decades, and that’s no simple feat.
While it’s not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and all at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
