Intro Email Marketing Mistakes
When I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what could you say? Email Marketing Mistakes
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online industries now, email advertising continues to be Dominated by the same large players for the last ten years. Which means they get encouraged very deeply and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So now, in this short article, I will be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it really stands its own ground against the big boys…

Like most email advertising providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, website, Business, address, company size, list size and even the kind of material you intend to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Website (or domain ).
This remains part of the acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is associated to that domain in order that they could email you a verification link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Steps, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, assess your Website, and ascertain whether you are a fantastic fit for their service.
(In other words, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to use the software to make campaigns and play with the features, but you will not be able to send anything before approved.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
But while these steps aren’t ideal for getting started, it Does help prevent unscrupulous users from damaging everybody’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to handle The majority of your email advertising.
(We will get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But whether it is a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Create Campaign’ will provide you several options.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Variations, including subject line, from title and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to subscribers who Do not open your broadcast email, with the option of changing the subject line and email content.
– RSS campaign: Create a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your site’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few additional options, the Majority of these will follow Exactly the exact same step-by-step procedure of a normal campaign.
So let’s walk you through it.
Once you click on to create your campaign, you’ll be asked to Pick a favorite editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can switch to the Templates tab and choose from among the pre-designed email templates — that will move you to the dragn’ drop editor by default.
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to select From which is a little on the low side, however, the designs are super modern.
And, of course, if you would just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I’ll choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to use, Which makes customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the cubes in the sidebar to include distinct Types of articles to your email, such as videos, product columns, and societal connections.
After making your adjustments, just click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ options where you can select your classes or sections.
The tab also allows you To build segment-like rules , in case your targeting is not quite perfect.
Finally, before sending, then you’ll get into the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, if that is instantly, at a set time/date, or according to your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Email Marketing Mistakes
Managing Your Clients
Having granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most essential facets of any email advertising software today.
Because highly personalized efforts Are Essential if You are searching to increase clicks, opens, and, most importantly, your conversions.
And while most providers allow you to”label” readers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different approach.
When you start up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll notice two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically principles.
Your readers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified principles, and are automatically inserted or removed so.
Here’s what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice how you can also blend Principles, in addition to an alternate rule if the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for groups, and despite the difference in name, These behave much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are updated manually or through an Automation principle — that we’ll get to in a minute — and they have no value besides what you actually call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, however, MailerLite offers a hand in case you’re uncertain:
Fundamentally, groups are more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments permit you to lump multiple contributors together according to a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it’s a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. Besides, they are optional.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their particular areas, such as title, business, and nation.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your readers along with Your custom field information in separate columns… or may simply add these fields to your forms which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I created and added into a form:
I won’t go too much into the shape Stuff here because I have a whole section on this below, but this is the strategy I’d recommend if you wanted to use this attribute.
Again, as Soon as You’ve gathered your custom field information from new Readers, you can pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Custom field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it is important that you understand this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to state MailerLite has their subscriber Management and personalization features on stage. Email Marketing Mistakes
If you’re not impressed by what you have seen up to Now, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Isn’t winning any awards, it will offer a great base to work from if, like most of us, you don’t have that pure eye for layout.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, though They ultimately do the same task; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further construct or change your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and this is better than some dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the fundamental building blocks, you can use elements like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all three form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Decent pair of form building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there is a lot to cover here.
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then place on your website to show it on particular pages.
Despite beginning super fundamental, the form designer lets you To customize everything from the form style, fields, background, title, enter fields and, of course, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which Provides you a Opportunity To visualize your backup in real-time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there is more to some form than just its physical appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form works, such as adding additional fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There’s even a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And talking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, That will replace the embedded form and prevents users from redirecting.
Last but surely not least, you Can check the way your form displays on mobile by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes here, but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of the Embedded form but as I said before, you can even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this installation process is identical, there are A few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do provide a fantastic foundation to work from and the editor is at least as simple to use with this form kind.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me to a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new options under form types This time around:
Contemplating paid tools such as Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to observe this level of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can perform with the styling options to get it Matched up with your branding.
Finally, you can Select the near Behaviour of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have both.
This is where most email Marketing platforms would render you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click data, Subscriber development, automation analytics, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific reporting for this effort.
This is where you’ll discover a few statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into different areas of the report to get a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
For example, the’View Mail’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see exactly how your subscribers interacted with your mails compared to another.
Reports for automations are also Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, even although I found to be less insightful than effort reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and most will find the available data more than sufficient to fulfill their demands.
What’s email advertising without a dashboard of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this particular review.
The good news? If you’ve ever used a visual workflow builder, You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, The automations interface is easy, clean and easy to navigate — something that certainly can not be said for every email advertising software.
After establishing your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, including a Delay, a conditional split, or an act, like transferring a contributor or upgrading their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where readers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign because it lacks a number of the conditional components. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.. )
For Instance, there’s now no automation for transferring Readers directly into a different automation.
That being said, the Majority of these actions can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into different groups that activate new automation workflows. It’s simply much less effective…. yet.
Another matter of efficacy here is when generating new emails In the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email block to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your topic line that then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the critique.
This time, but once you’ve established your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you back into the automations workflow instead of the usual sending alternatives.
Finally, your email address will be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation cube, which means you can get an idea about what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on paper, it’s actually much faster than what I’m utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, you’ll probably find that this downgrade in functionality.
It is quick enough for me, Personally, but I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s 1 type of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and I think it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or measure ) based on how Subscribers interact with all the pages on your site.
This Sort of behavioral targeting only is not available in MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or plan to utilize, you may want to skip this one. Email Marketing Mistakes
The cost of MailerLite is no doubt one of those tools biggest Selling things, and let us face it, we all love a fantastic deal.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All features (including premium) for up to 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding in your mails using this plan, it’s still an amazing alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium programs?
It ends up, at approximately half the Price of the competition generally, MailerLite is by far among the cheapest options on the market. Additionally, if you are ready to pay yearly, you can also get a much better discount.
In fact, I haven’t been able to locate anything that does exactly the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of the email marketing tools to interrupt The (very crowded) industry in recent decades, which is no simple feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and all at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
