If I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what would you say? Esputnik
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online businesses now, email marketing has been Dominated by the identical large players for the previous decade. Which means they get encouraged very deeply and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So today, in this review, I will be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to find out if it really stands its own ground against the big boys…
…and, more importantly, whether youshould consider making the switch.

Like most email marketing providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the program.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, website, Business, address, company size, record size and also the kind of material you plan to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Website (or domain ).
This remains part of this acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is associated to this domain in order that they can email you a confirmation link.
Once you’ve completed those Measures, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, check your Website, and determine whether you’re a fantastic match for their service.
(In other words, they’re making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and play with the features, but you won’t be able to send anything before approved.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
However, while these measures aren’t perfect for getting started, it Does help prevent malicious users from hurting everybody’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to Deal with The majority of your email advertising.
(We’ll get to automations shortly, do not worry.)
But if it’s a brand new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Produce Campaign’ will provide you several choices.
– Regular campaign: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Versions, such as subject line, from title and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to subscribers who Do not start your broadcast email, together with the option of altering the subject line and email content.
– RSS effort: Produce a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to subscribers using your website’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few added choices, the Majority of these will follow Exactly the exact same step-by-step process of a normal campaign.
So let’s walk you through it.
Once you click on to create your effort, you’ll be requested to Select a preferred editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can switch to the Templates tab and select from among the pre-designed email templates — that will move you into the dragn’ drop editor by default.
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to select From which is somewhat on the low side, but the layouts are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you would just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I will choose the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to use, Making customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the cubes in the sidebar to include distinct Types of articles to your email, such as videos, merchandise columns, and societal links.
After making your changes, just click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be carried to the recipients’ options where you are able to select your classes or segments.
The advanced tab also allows one To develop segment-like rules , in case your targeting is not quite perfect.
Finally, right before sending, you’ll get to the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, whether that is instantly, at a set time/date, or according to your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Esputnik
Managing Your Subscribers
Having granular control over your subscribers is arguably among The most important aspects of any email marketing software today.
Because highly personalized campaigns Are Essential if You’re looking to increase clicks, opens, and, most importantly, your own conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”tag” readers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you open up your subscriber dash, you’ll see two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially principles.
Your subscribers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified rules, and are automatically inserted or eliminated so.
Here is what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can also combine Rules, in addition to another rule if the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for groups, and despite the difference in title, These behave much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are updated manually or through an Automation rule — that we will get to in a moment — and they don’t have any value aside from what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand At which Segments and Groups are generally used, but MailerLite delivers a hand in the event you’re uncertain:
Fundamentally, groups are much more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments allow you to bulge multiple subscribers collectively based on a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I will admit… but I believe it’s a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. Besides, they’re discretionary.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their own areas, such as name, business, and nation.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your readers together with Your custom field information in separate columns… or may easily add these fields to your forms which will only apply to prospective readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added into a form:
I will not go too much to the form Stuff here since I have a whole section on that below, but this is the approach I would recommend if you wanted to use this attribute.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field data from fresh Subscribers, you are able to pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Custom field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it’s important to understand this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it’s fair to say MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on stage. Esputnik
If you’re not impressed by what you’ve seen so far, then perhaps The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you’ll be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Is not winning any awards, it will offer a fantastic foundation to work from if, like the majority of us, you do not have that natural eye for design.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, though They all ultimately do the identical job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual site builders, and this is already better than some dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the basic building blocks, you can use elements like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all 3 kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite really Provides a Adequate set of type building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there is a lot to cover .
Let us start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to show it on specific pages.
Despite beginning super fundamental, the form designer lets you To personalize everything from the form style, subjects, background, name, input fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which gives you a chance To visualize your copy in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there is more to some form than simply its physical appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form works, including adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There is even a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, That will replace the embedded form also prevents users .
Last but certainly not least, you Can check the way your form displays on mobile by shifting the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any layout changes , but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that’s an Summary of the Embedded form but like I said before, you can also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of this installation process is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive selection, they do offer a fantastic foundation to work from and the editor is just as easy to use with this form type.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template takes me into a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new choices under form types This time around:
Considering paid tools such as Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this amount of control over popup types.
And, like before, you can perform the styling options to get it Matched with your own branding.
Finally, you can Select the close Behaviour of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text option, or have .
That is where most email Marketing platforms would render you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Statistics in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific coverage for that effort.
This is where you’ll find a few more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying surroundings, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into different areas of this report for a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Email’ tab also shows a click map, so You can see your subscribers interacted to one another.
Reports for automations will also be Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, even although I found to be less enlightening than effort reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and most will get the available data more than sufficient to meet their demands.
What’s email marketing without a dash of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this particular review.
The great news? If you’ve used a visual workflow builder, then You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, The automations interface is easy, clean and easy to navigate — something that certainly can’t be said for every email marketing program.
After establishing your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, including a Postpone, a conditional split, or an action, such as transferring a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where readers Are unsubscribed if they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should have no trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional components. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.)
For example, there’s now no automation for transferring Subscribers directly into a different automation.
That being said, most of these actions can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into different classes that trigger new automation workflows. It’s simply not as efficient…. yet.
Another question of efficiency here is when creating new emails From the automation workflow builder.
After having an email cube to The workflow, you’ll be asked to put in your topic line which appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the review.
This time, however, once you’ve created your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email address will be Loaded into your automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation block, so it’s possible to find an idea of what it contains at a glance.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on paper, it’s really much faster than what I’m used to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, so you’ll probably find that this downgrade in functionality.
It’s quick enough for me, Personally, but I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s 1 Kind of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and I think it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on the way Subscribers interact with all the pages on your site.
This Sort of behavioral targeting only isn’t available in MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or plan to use, you may want to skip this one. Esputnik
The Price of MailerLite is no doubt among the tools largest Selling things, and let us face it, most of us love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All features (including premium) for up to 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding on your emails using this plan, it’s still an amazing alternative for those starting out.
And what about the top programs?
It ends up, at around half of the Price of the rivalry generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the cheapest options available on the industry. Additionally, if you are willing to pay annually, you are also able to get a much better discount.
In fact, I have not been able to locate anything that does exactly the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among those email advertising tools The (very crowded) industry in recent years, which is no easy feat.
While it’s not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and all at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking of giving it a spin? Let us know how it works for you From the remarks. Esputnik
