MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online businesses now, email marketing continues to be Dominated by the same large players for the last decade. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time customers to question their loyalties.

Like most email marketing providers Nowadays, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the program.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information like your organization name, site, Industry, address, business size, record size and even the kind of content you plan to send.
Then, you need to verify your Site (or domain ).
This is still part of the approval process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is related to that domain so they could email you a confirmation link.
Once you’ve completed those Measures, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, assess your Site, and determine whether you are a fantastic fit for their service.
(In other words, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to use the software to make campaigns and play with the attributes, but you will not have the ability to send anything until approved.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
But while these steps are not perfect for getting started, it Does help stop malicious users from hurting everyone else’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to handle The majority of your email advertising.
(We’ll get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But whether it is a brand new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always a reason to send a more instant email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Produce Campaign’ will provide you several choices.
– Regular effort: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Variations, including subject line, from title and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not start your broadcast email, with the choice of altering the subject line and email articles.
– RSS effort: Create a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your site’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few added options, the Majority of these will follow Exactly the same step-by-step procedure of a normal campaign.
So let us walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your campaign, you’ll be requested to Pick a favorite editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can switch to the Templates tab and select from among the pre-designed email templates — that will move you to the dragn’ drop editor .
In the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to choose From which is somewhat on the low side, but the designs are super modern.
And, of course, if you’d just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I will choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to use, Which makes customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the blocks in the sidebar to include distinct Types of content to your email, such as videos, product columns, and societal links.
After making your changes, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ choices where you are able to choose your groups or sections.
The advanced tab also allows you To develop segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, right before sending, you’ll get to the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, if that is immediately, at a set time/date, or according to your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Gartner Email Marketing Magic Quadrant 2016
Handling Your Clients
Having granular control over your subscribers is arguably among The most important facets of any email advertising software today.
Because highly personalized efforts Are Essential if You are looking to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your own conversions.
And while many providers allow you to”tag” subscribers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you start up your subscriber dash, you’ll see two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically principles.
Your readers belong to a section only when they fulfill the Specified rules, and are automatically added or removed accordingly.
Here is what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can even blend Rules, as well as another rule if the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for groups, and also the difference in title, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but finally decided against it)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are updated manually or through an Automation principle — that we will get to in a minute — and they have no value aside from what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, but MailerLite offers a hand in case you’re uncertain:
Basically, groups are much more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments allow you to bulge multiple subscribers collectively based on a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. In any case, they’re discretionary.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their own areas, such as title, company, and nation.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your readers together with Your custom field data in distinct columns… or can simply add these fields to a forms which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I made and added to a form:
I will not go too much to the shape Things here since I have a whole section on this below, but this is the approach I would recommend if you wanted to use this attribute.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field data from new Readers, you can pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Custom field.
I am barely scratching the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it’s important to know that this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it’s fair to say MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on point. Gartner Email Marketing Magic Quadrant 2016
If you’re not impressed with what you have seen up to Now, then maybe The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, then you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Is not winning any awards, it does offer a fantastic foundation to work from if, for example the majority of us, you do not have that natural eye for layout.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, however They finally do the same task; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further construct or change your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual site builders, and it is better than some dedicated solutions *Infection * WPBakery.
Together with the basic building blocks, you can use elements like Hero sections, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
No, it will not be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Adequate set of form building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there’s a lot to cover here.
Let’s begin with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to display it on specific pages.
Despite starting off super basic, the form designer allows you To personalize everything in the form style, fields, background, title, enter fields and, of course, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which Provides you a Opportunity To envision your own backup in real time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there’s more to a form than just its physical appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure how the Form works, such as adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There is a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success page…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, That will replace the embedded kind and prevents users .
Last but surely not least, you Can assess how your form screens on cellular by switching the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any design changes here, but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of this Embedded form but as I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this installation process is identical, there are A few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive choice, they do offer a fantastic foundation to work from and the editor is just as easy to use for this form type.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template requires me to a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new options under form types This time around:
Contemplating paid programs such as Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to observe this level of control over popup forms.
And, like before, you can play with the styling options to get it Matched up with your own branding.
Last, you can Select the close Behaviour of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text choice, or have both.
That is really where most email Marketing platforms will leave you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Statistics in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click info, Subscriber development, automation analytics, and kind signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you specific coverage for that campaign.
This is where you’ll discover some more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying surroundings, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into different areas of this report to get a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Mail’ tab also shows a click map, so You can see precisely how your subscribers interacted with your emails in relation to another.
Reports for automations are also Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, though I found to be less enlightening than effort reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and most will get the available data more than enough to fulfill their needs.
What’s email marketing with no dash of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this particular review.
The great news? If you have used a visual workflow builder, You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, The automations interface is easy, clean and simple to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for every email marketing program.
After establishing your trigger, you can begin adding measures to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, including a Delay, a conditional split, or an action, like moving a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I put together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within 7 days.
There are innumerable Possibilities in regards to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should have no trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.. )
For Instance, there’s now no automation for transferring Subscribers directly into a different automation.
That being said, the Majority of these actions can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into different groups that activate new automation workflows. It’s just much less effective…. yet.
Another matter of efficiency here is when creating new emails From the automation workflow builder.
After having an email block to The workflow, you will be asked to add your topic line that then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the review.
This time, however, as Soon as You’ve created your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you straight back to the automations workflow rather than the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email address will be Loaded into your automation.
A Wonderful touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, so it’s possible to find an idea about what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on paper, it’s really much quicker than what I’m utilized to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, you will likely find that this downgrade in performance.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, however I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there’s one Kind of automation You will not find in MailerLite, and that I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or measure ) based on the way Readers interact with the webpages on your site.
This Sort of behavioral targeting just is not accessible MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or plan to use, you may want to skip this one. Gartner Email Marketing Magic Quadrant 2016
The Price of MailerLite is no doubt one of those tools largest Selling things, and let us face it, most of us love a good deal.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding in your mails using this plan, it is still an amazing alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the top programs?
It turns out, at approximately half the Price of this rivalry generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the least expensive options on the market. Additionally, if you’re willing to pay yearly, you can also get an even greater discount.
In Reality, I have not been able to locate anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of those email advertising tools The (very crowded) sector in the last couple of years, which is no simple feat.
While it is not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
All in all, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and all at a price point you will seriously struggle to beat.
