Introduction Google Email Marketing
When I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what could you say? Google Email Marketing
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online businesses now, email marketing has been Dominated by the identical big players for the last ten years. Which means that they get encouraged very deeply and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So now, in this review, I will be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to see if it really stands its own ground against the big boys…

Like most email advertising providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the software.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your company name, site, Industry, address, company size, record size and even the type of content you intend to send.
Then, you need to verify your Site (or domain ).
This remains part of this acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is associated to this domain in order that they can email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Measures, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, assess your Site, and determine whether you’re a fantastic fit for their service.
(In other words, they are making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll still be Able to use the software to make campaigns and play with the features, but you will not be able to send anything before approved.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these steps aren’t ideal for getting started, it Does help prevent unscrupulous users from damaging everyone else’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to Deal with The majority of your email advertising.
(We’ll get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But whether it’s a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always a reason to send a more instant email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Create Campaign’ will provide you several options.
– Regular campaign: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Versions, such as subject line, from title and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not open your broadcast email, together with the choice of changing the subject line and email articles.
– RSS campaign: Create a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your website’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few added options, most of these will follow The exact same step-by-step process of a standard effort.
So let us walk you through it.
Once you click to create your campaign, you’ll be asked to Select a favorite editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can change to the Templates tab and select from one of the pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor .
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to select From which is a little on the low side, however, the layouts are super modern.
And, of course, if you’d just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I will choose the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to use, Making viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the blocks in the sidebar to add different Types of articles to your email, such as videos, merchandise columns, and societal connections.
After making your adjustments, just click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ choices where you are able to select your classes or sections.
The advanced tab also allows one To develop segment-like rules , in case your targeting isn’t quite perfect.
Finally, right before sending, then you’ll get to the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, if that’s immediately, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Google Email Marketing
Managing Your Clients
Possessing granular control over your readers is arguably one of The most important facets of any email marketing program now.
Because highly personalized campaigns Are Essential if You’re looking to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your own conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”tag” subscribers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different approach.
When you start up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll notice two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially principles.
Your readers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified principles, and are automatically inserted or removed so.
Here is what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can even combine Principles, as well as an alternate rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for groups, and also the difference in title, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are updated manually or through an Automation rule — which we will get into in a minute — and they have no value aside from what you actually call them.
As you start to use this platform, you’ll Start to understand At which Segments and Groups are typically used, but MailerLite offers a hand in the event you’re uncertain:
Fundamentally, groups are more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple contributors together based on a common denominator.
A tad confusing, I will admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. Besides, they’re discretionary.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own areas, such as name, company, and country.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your readers together with Your custom field information in distinct columns… or can simply add these fields to a forms which will only apply to prospective readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I created and added into a form:
I will not go too much into the form Things here since I have an entire section on that below, but this is the approach I would recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve collected your custom field information from fresh Readers, you can pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Custom field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it’s important that you know that this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it is reasonable to say MailerLite has their subscriber Management and personalization features on point. Google Email Marketing
If you’re not impressed by what you’ve seen so far, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Isn’t winning any awards, but it will offer a great foundation to work from if, like most of us, you don’t have that pure eye for layout.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, however They all ultimately do the same task; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or change your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual page builders, and it is already better than some dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the fundamental building blocks, you can use components like Hero segments, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
No, it won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Decent pair of form building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there is a whole lot to cover .
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to show it on particular pages.
Despite beginning super fundamental, the form designer allows you To customize everything from the kind style, fields, background, title, input fields and, of course, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To envision your own backup in real-time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there is more to some form than just its physical appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure the way the Form works, including adding extra fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There is even a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And talking of the success page…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, That can replace the embedded kind also prevents users from redirecting.
Last but surely not least, you Can assess the way your form screens on cellular by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes , but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that is an Summary of the Embedded form but as I said before, you can even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of the setup Procedure is identical, there are A few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do provide a fantastic foundation to work from and the editor is just as simple to use for this form type.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me into a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new choices under form types This time around:
Contemplating paid programs such as Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this amount of control over popup forms.
And, like before, you can play with the styling options to get it Matched up with your branding.
Finally, you can choose the near Behaviour of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text option, or have .
That is where most email Marketing platforms would leave you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and form signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific reporting for that effort.
This is where you’ll find a few more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading environment, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into different areas of this report for a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Email’ tab also shows a click map, so It’s possible to see precisely how your subscribers interacted with your emails compared to another.
Reports for automations are also Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, though I found to be less insightful than campaign reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and many will get the available statistics more than sufficient to fulfill their needs.
What’s email marketing with no dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The great news? If you’ve used a visual workflow builder, then You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and simple to navigate — something that certainly can’t be said for every email marketing software.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding steps to your workflow.
These measures could be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a bubble break, or an act, like transferring a subscriber or upgrading their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed when they don’t open my email within seven days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite ought to have no trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign since it lacks a number of the conditional elements. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.. )
For example, there’s now no automation for transferring Readers directly into a different automation.
That being said, the Majority of these actions can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into various classes that activate new automation workflows. It’s simply much less efficient…. yet.
Another question of efficacy here is when generating new mails In the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your topic line that then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, however, as Soon as You’ve established your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you straight back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending alternatives.
Finally, your email address will be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation cube, which means it’s possible to get an concept of what it contains at a glimpse.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on paper, it’s really much quicker than what I am utilized to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you will likely find this a downgrade in functionality.
It’s fast enough for me, Personally, however I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s 1 type of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and that I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or step) based on the way Subscribers interact with the pages on your site.
This Sort of behavioral targeting just is not accessible MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or intend to utilize, you might want to skip this one. Google Email Marketing
The Price of MailerLite is one of those tools biggest Selling points, and let us face it, we all love a good bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) for as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding on your emails using this program, it’s still an amazing alternative for those starting out.
And what about the premium plans?
It ends up, at approximately half the Price of this rivalry generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the least expensive options available on the industry. Plus, if you are willing to pay yearly, you are also able to get a much better discount.
In fact, I have not been able to find anything that does exactly the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among those very few marketing tools to interrupt The (very crowded) industry in recent years, which is no easy feat.
While it’s not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and at a price point you will seriously struggle to beat.
