When I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what could you say? Listrocket
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online businesses now, email advertising has been Dominated by the identical large players for the last decade. Which means they get promoted very heavily and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So today, in this short article, I’ll be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to find out if it stands its own ground against the big boys…

Like most email advertising providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the program.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, site, Business, address, business size, record size and even the type of material you intend to send.
Then, you need to confirm your Site (or domain name).
This is still part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is associated to this domain so they could email you a verification link.
As Soon as You’ve completed those Measures, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, check your Website, and determine whether you are a fantastic fit for their service.
(In other words, they’re making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to use the software to make campaigns and play with the attributes, but you will not be able to send anything until approved.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these steps are not perfect for getting started, it Does help prevent unscrupulous users from damaging everyone else’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to Deal with Nearly all your email advertising.
(We will get to automations soon, do not worry.)
But whether it is a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Create Campaign’ will provide you several choices.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Variations, including subject line, from title and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Don’t start your broadcast email, together with the choice of changing the subject line and email content.
– RSS effort: Produce a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to subscribers using your website’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few added options, most of these will follow The exact same step-by-step procedure of a standard campaign.
So let us walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your effort, you’ll be asked to Select a preferred editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can change to the Templates tab and choose from one of the pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor .
In the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to choose From which is somewhat on the low side, but the layouts are super modern.
And, of course, if you’d just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to use, Making customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the blocks in the sidebar to include distinct Types of articles to your email, such as videos, merchandise columns, and societal connections.
After making your changes, simply click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be carried to the recipients’ choices where you are able to choose your classes or segments.
The advanced tab also allows one To develop segment-like rules , in the event your targeting isn’t quite right.
Finally, before sending, then you’ll get to the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, whether that is instantly, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Listrocket
Managing Your Subscribers
Having granular control over your readers is arguably one of The most important aspects of any email advertising software now.
Because highly personalized efforts are necessary if You’re searching to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your own conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”tag” subscribers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you open up your subscriber dash, you’ll see two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically principles.
Your readers belong to a section only when they fulfill the Specified principles, and will be automatically added or eliminated so.
Here’s what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice how you can also blend Rules, in addition to another rule if the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for classes, and despite the difference in title, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but finally decided against it)
Unlike Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or through an Automation principle — which we will get into in a moment — and they have no value aside from what you call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll begin to understand At which Segments and Groups are generally used, but MailerLite delivers a hand in the event you’re unsure:
Fundamentally, groups are more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments permit you to lump multiple subscribers collectively according to a frequent denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I will admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. Besides, they are optional.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own areas, such as name, business, and country.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers along with Your custom field data in separate columns… or can simply add these fields to a types which will only apply to prospective subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added to a form:
I will not go too much to the shape Stuff here since I have an entire section on that below, but this is the approach I would recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field information from new Readers, you can pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Custom field.
I am barely scraping the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it is important that you know that this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it is fair to state MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on point. Listrocket
If you’re not impressed by what you have seen so far, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, then you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Isn’t winning any awards, but it will offer a great base to work from if, for example most people, you do not have that natural eye for layout.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, however They ultimately do the same job; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further build or change your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and this is better than some dedicated alternatives *Infection * WPBakery.
Along with the basic building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite really offers a Decent set of form building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there’s a lot to cover .
Let us begin with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then put on your website to show it on particular pages.
Despite starting off super fundamental, the form designer allows you To personalize everything in the form style, fields, background, name, enter fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To envision your own copy in real time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there is more to some form than simply its physical appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form works, including adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There is even a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, That will replace the embedded kind also prevents users from redirecting.
Last but surely not least, you Can check the way your form displays on cellular by switching the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any design changes , but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that is an Summary of the Embedded form but like I said before, you may even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of this setup Procedure is identical, you will find Still a few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive selection, they do provide a fantastic foundation to work from and the editor is just as easy to use for this form kind.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me to a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new options under form types Now around:
Considering paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this amount of control over popup forms.
And, like before, you can perform the styling options to get it Matched with your branding.
Last, you can choose the near Behaviour of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
That is where most email Marketing platforms would render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click info, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and kind signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you special coverage for this campaign.
This is where you’ll find some statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average consumer…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into different areas of this report for a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
For example, the’View Email’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see your readers interacted to another.
Reports for automations are Available under the’Automations’ tab, even although I found these to be less enlightening than effort reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and many will find the available data more than sufficient to fulfill their needs.
What is email marketing with no dashboard of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this particular review.
The great news? If you’ve used a visual workflow builder, You will instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and easy to navigate — something which certainly can not be said for every email advertising program.
After establishing your trigger, you can begin adding measures to your workflow.
These measures could be anything from sending an email, adding a Delay, a conditional split, or an action, such as transferring a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I put together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within seven days.
There are countless Possibilities in regards to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should have no trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.. )
For example, there’s now no automation for moving Readers directly into a different automation.
That being said, most of these actions can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into different classes that activate new automation workflows. It is just much less effective…. yet.
Another question of efficiency here is when generating new emails In the automation workflow builder.
After having an email cube to The workflow, you’ll be asked to put in your subject line which appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, however, once you’ve created your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you straight back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending alternatives.
Finally, your email address will be Loaded into your own automation.
A Wonderful touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation block, which means you can find an concept of what it contains at a glimpse.
While this process may seem like A grind on paper, it’s actually much faster than what I’m utilized to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you will probably find this a downgrade in functionality.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there is one type of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, also I think that it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on the way Readers interact with the webpages on your website.
This kind of behavioral targeting just isn’t available in MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or plan to utilize, you might want to skip this one. Listrocket
The Price of MailerLite is one of the tools biggest Selling things, and let’s face it, we all love a fantastic deal.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) to get up to 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your mails using this program, it is still an wonderful option for anyone starting out.
And what about the top plans?
It turns out, at approximately half of the Cost of this competition on average, MailerLite is by far among the cheapest options on the industry. Plus, if you are ready to pay yearly, you can also get an even better discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to locate anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of those few email marketing tools The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of decades, which is no simple feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and all at a price point you will seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking of giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you In the comments. Listrocket
