If I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what would you say? Lynda Email Marketing Basics
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online businesses now, email advertising continues to be Dominated by the identical large players for the previous decade. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time users to question their loyalties.

Like most email marketing providers these days, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information such as your company name, site, Industry, address, business size, record size and also the kind of material you intend to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Website (or domain name).
This is still part of the acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to that domain so they could email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed those Steps, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, assess your Site, and ascertain whether you’re a good match for their service.
(In other words, they are making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll still be Able to utilize the software to create campaigns and perform with the features, but you won’t be able to send anything until accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these steps are not ideal for getting started, it Does help stop unscrupulous users from hurting everyone else’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to Deal with Nearly all your email marketing.
(We will get to automations shortly, do not worry.)
But whether it’s a brand new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always some excuse to send a more instant email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Create Campaign’ will give you several options.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Variations, such as subject line, from title and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to subscribers who Don’t start your broadcast email, with the option of altering the subject line and email content.
– RSS effort: Create a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your website’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few additional options, the Majority of these will follow Exactly the same step-by-step procedure of a normal campaign.
So let us walk you through it.
Once you click on to create your effort, you’ll be asked to Pick a favorite editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can switch to the Templates tab and select from among the pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor by default.
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to select From which is a little on the low side, but the designs are super modern.
And, of course, if you would just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I will select the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to use, Which makes viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the blocks in the sidebar to include distinct Kinds of content to your email, such as videos, merchandise columns, and societal connections.
After making your changes, just click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be taken to the recipients’ options where you can select your groups or sections.
The tab also allows you To develop segment-like rules on-the-fly, in case your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, before sending, you’ll get into the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, whether that’s immediately, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Lynda Email Marketing Basics
Handling Your Subscribers
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most important facets of any email advertising software today.
Because highly personalized campaigns Are Essential if You’re searching to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your conversions.
And while most providers allow you to”label” readers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different approach.
When you open up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically rules.
Your subscribers belong to a section only when they fulfill the Specified rules, and will be automatically added or eliminated accordingly.
Here is what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can even blend Rules, as well as another rule when the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for groups, and also the difference in title, These behave much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or through an Automation rule — which we will get to in a minute — and they have no value aside from what you call them.
As you start to use this platform, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, however, MailerLite delivers a hand in case you’re uncertain:
Basically, groups are more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple subscribers together according to a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. Besides, they’re discretionary.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their particular areas, such as title, business, and nation.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your subscribers along with Your custom field information in separate columns… or may easily add these fields to your types which will only apply to prospective readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I created and added into a form:
I won’t go too much to the form Stuff here because I have a whole section on this below, but this is the approach I would recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field information from new Readers, you can pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Customized field.
I am barely scratching the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it’s important to know that this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to say MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on point. Lynda Email Marketing Basics
If you’re not impressed with what you have seen so far, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you will be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Isn’t winning any awards, it will offer a great base to work from if, for example most of us, you don’t have that pure eye for layout.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, however They finally do the same job; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further construct or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual page builders, and this is better than some dedicated alternatives *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the fundamental building blocks, you can use components like Hero segments, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite really Provides a Adequate set of form building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there is a whole lot to cover .
Let us begin with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then place on your website to display it on particular pages.
Despite starting off super fundamental, the form designer lets you To customize everything in the form style, subjects, background, title, enter fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To visualize your copy in real time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there is more to some form than simply its physical appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure how the Form functions, such as adding extra fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There’s a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And talking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, Which will replace the embedded kind and prevents users from redirecting.
Last but surely not least, you Can check how your form displays on mobile by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t be able to make any design changes here, but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that is an Summary of this Embedded form but like I said before, you can also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of this setup process is identical, there are A few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive selection, they do offer a fantastic foundation to work from and the editor is just as simple to use with this form kind.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template takes me to a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new choices under form types This time around:
Contemplating paid programs such as Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this amount of control over popup forms.
And, as before, you can play the styling options to get it Matched up with your branding.
Last, you can Select the close Behaviour of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
That is where most email Marketing platforms would leave you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Statistics in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific coverage for that effort.
This is where you’ll find some more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into individual areas of the report to get a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
For example, the’View Mail’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see your subscribers interacted with your emails in relation to another.
Reports for automations are Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, though I found these to be less insightful than effort reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and most will find the available statistics more than sufficient to fulfill their demands.
What is email advertising with no dashboard of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The good news? If you’ve ever used a visual workflow builder, You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, The automations interface is simple, clean and easy to navigate — something that certainly can’t be said for every email advertising software.
After establishing your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, adding a Delay, a conditional split, or an act, like transferring a contributor or upgrading their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities in regards to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should have no trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.. )
For example, there’s now no automation for transferring Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, the Majority of these activities can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into various classes that trigger new automation workflows. It is just not as efficient…. yet.
Another question of efficacy here is when creating new mails From the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your subject line which then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the review.
This time, however, as Soon as You’ve created your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you straight back into the automations workflow instead of the usual sending options.
Ultimately, your email address will probably be Loaded into your automation.
A Wonderful touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation cube, so you can get an concept about what it contains at a glance.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on paper, it is really much faster than what I’m used to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, you’ll likely find this a downgrade in functionality.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, however I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s 1 Kind of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and I think that it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or measure ) based on the way Subscribers interact with the pages on your website.
This kind of behavioral targeting just isn’t available in MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or plan to utilize, you may want to skip this one. Lynda Email Marketing Basics
The cost of MailerLite is one of those tools largest Selling things, and let’s face it, most of us love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) for up to 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding on your mails using this program, it’s still an wonderful alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the top programs?
It ends up, at around half of the Cost of this rivalry on average, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the cheapest options on the industry. Additionally, if you are willing to pay yearly, you can also get a much better discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to find anything that does exactly the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of the email advertising tools to interrupt The (very crowded) industry in recent years, which is no simple feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
All in all, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and all at a price point you will seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking about giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you From the remarks. Lynda Email Marketing Basics
