MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online businesses today, email marketing has been Dominated by the same big players for the last decade. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time customers to question their loyalties.

Like most email advertising providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the software.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, website, Industry, address, company size, record size and also the type of content you plan to send.
Then, you need to verify your Website (or domain name).
This remains part of the approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to this domain so they could email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed those Steps, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, assess your Site, and ascertain whether you’re a fantastic match for their services.
(Quite simply, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to use the software to create campaigns and play with the attributes, but you won’t have the ability to send anything until approved.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
But while these measures are not ideal for getting started, it Does help prevent unscrupulous users from damaging everybody’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to Deal with The majority of your email advertising.
(We will get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But whether it’s a new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Create Campaign’ will provide you several options.
– Regular effort: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Versions, including subject line, from title and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Don’t open your broadcast email, with the option of altering the subject line and email articles.
– RSS campaign: Produce a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to readers using your site’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few added options, most of these will follow The exact same step-by-step procedure of a standard campaign.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your effort, you’ll be requested to Pick a preferred editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can change to the Templates tab and select from among their pre-designed email templates — that will move you to the dragn’ drop editor .
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to select From which is a little on the low side, but the designs are super modern.
And, of course, if you’d just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I will select the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Making viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the cubes in the sidebar to add distinct Kinds of articles to your email, such as videos, product columns, and social connections.
After making your changes, just click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ options where you can select your groups or segments.
The tab also allows you To develop segment-like rules , in the event your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, right before sending, then you’ll get to the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, whether that is immediately, at a set time/date, or according to your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Mailerlite Hackathon
Managing Your Clients
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably among The most essential aspects of any email marketing software today.
Because highly personalized campaigns Are Essential if You are looking to increase clicks, opens, and, most importantly, your own conversions.
And while many providers allow you to”label” readers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you open up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll notice two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially principles.
Your subscribers belong to a segment only when they fulfill the Specified rules, and will be automatically added or removed accordingly.
Here is what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can also blend Rules, in addition to an alternate rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for classes, and despite the difference in title, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but finally decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are updated manually or through an Automation rule — which we will get into in a minute — and they don’t have any value besides what you call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, however, MailerLite offers a hand in case you’re unsure:
Fundamentally, groups are more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple subscribers together according to a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. Besides, they are discretionary.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own areas, such as name, company, and country.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your readers together with Your custom field information in separate columns… or can easily add these fields to your forms which will only apply to prospective readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I created and added to a form:
I won’t go too much into the shape Things here since I have an entire section on that below, but this is the strategy I’d recommend if you wished to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field data from new Readers, you can pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Custom field.
I am barely scraping the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it’s important to understand that this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it is reasonable to state MailerLite has their subscriber Direction and personalization features on point. Mailerlite Hackathon
If you’re not impressed with what you have seen so far, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Is not winning any awards, but it will offer a great foundation to work from if, like most people, you do not have that natural eye for design.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, however They ultimately do the identical job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual page builders, and it is already better than some dedicated solutions *Infection * WPBakery.
Together with the fundamental building blocks, you can use elements like Hero segments, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it will not be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all three form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite really offers a Decent set of form building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there’s a whole lot to cover .
Let us start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then put on your site to display it on particular pages.
Despite beginning super fundamental, the form designer allows you To personalize everything from the kind style, subjects, background, title, enter fields and, of course, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To envision your own copy in real time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there’s more to a form than simply its appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure how the Form functions, such as adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There is even a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And talking of the success page…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, Which will replace the embedded kind also prevents users .
Last but surely not least, you Can assess how your form displays on mobile by shifting the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes here, but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that is an Summary of this Embedded form but like I said before, you can even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of the installation Procedure is identical, you will find A few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth selection, they do provide a good base to work from and the editor is at least as simple to use with this form type.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me to a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new choices under form types This time around:
Considering paid tools such as Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to observe this level of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can perform with the styling options to get it Matched with your own branding.
Last, you can Select the close Behaviour of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have both.
That is where most email Marketing platforms would leave you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation analytics, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you special coverage for that effort.
This is where you’ll find some more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into individual areas of the report to get a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Email’ tab also shows a click map, so It’s possible to see precisely how your subscribers interacted with your emails compared to another.
Reports for automations will also be Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, although I found to be less enlightening than campaign reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and many will find the available data more than sufficient to meet their demands.
What is email marketing without a dashboard of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this particular review.
The good news? If you’ve ever used a visual workflow builder, You will instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and easy to navigate — something that certainly can’t be said for each and every email advertising software.
After establishing your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These steps could be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a conditional split, or an action, like transferring a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where readers Are unsubscribed when they don’t open my email within seven days.
There are countless Possibilities in regards to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign since it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.. )
For example, there’s currently no automation for transferring Readers directly into another automation.
That being said, the Majority of these activities can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into different classes that activate new automation workflows. It’s just much less effective…. yet.
Another question of efficacy here is when creating new emails In the automation workflow builder.
After having an email block to The workflow, you’ll be asked to add your topic line which then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the critique.
This time, but once you’ve established your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending options.
Ultimately, your email will be Loaded into your automation.
A Wonderful touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation block, which means it’s possible to get an concept about what it contains at a glance.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on newspaper, it is really much faster than what I am used to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you’ll probably find this a downgrade in performance.
It’s fast enough for me, Personally, however I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there is 1 Kind of automation You will not find in MailerLite, and I think it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or measure ) based on the way Readers interact with the pages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting only isn’t accessible MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or intend to utilize, you may want to skip this one. Mailerlite Hackathon
The Price of MailerLite is one of those tools biggest Selling points, and let’s face it, we all love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) to get up to 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding on your emails using this program, it’s still an amazing alternative for those starting out.
And what about the top programs?
It turns out, at around half of the Cost of this competition on average, MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the least expensive options on the market. Plus, if you are willing to pay yearly, you are also able to get a much greater discount.
In Reality, I have not been able to locate anything that does exactly the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among the few email marketing tools The (very crowded) industry in recent years, which is no easy feat.
While it is not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and all at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking of giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you In the remarks. Mailerlite Hackathon
