Like most online businesses now, email marketing has been Dominated by the same big players for the last ten years. Which means they get encouraged very deeply and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So now, in this review, I’ll be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it really stands its own ground against the big boys…
…and, what’s more, whether youshould consider making the switch.

Like most email marketing providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the program.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, website, Industry, address, company size, list size and also the kind of material you plan to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Site (or domain name).
This is still part of the acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is associated to this domain in order that they can email you a confirmation link.

This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, if that is instantly, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your subscribers time zones.

Managing Your Clients
Having granular control over your subscribers is arguably among The most essential aspects of any email marketing software today.
Because highly personalized efforts are necessary if You’re looking to increase clicks, opens, and, above all, your own conversions.
And while many providers Permit You to”label” subscribers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different approach.
When you open up your subscriber dash, you’ll notice two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically principles.
Your readers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified principles, and will be automatically added or removed so.
Here is what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can also blend Principles, in addition to an alternate rule if the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for groups, and also the difference in title, These behave much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or through an Automation rule — which we’ll get to in a minute — and they don’t have any value aside from what you actually call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, but MailerLite delivers a hand in case you’re uncertain:
Fundamentally, groups are much more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple contributors together according to a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. In any case, they are discretionary.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their own areas, such as title, business, and country.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your readers along with Your custom field information in separate columns… or may easily add these fields to your types which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I made and added into a form:
I will not go too much into the shape Stuff here because I have an entire section on this below, but this is the strategy I’d recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field data from fresh Readers, you can pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Custom field.
I am barely scratching the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it’s important that you know this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it is fair to say MailerLite has their contributor Management and personalization features on stage. Mailerlite Learning
If you’re not impressed by what you have seen so far, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, you’ll be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Is not winning any awards, but it will offer a fantastic foundation to work from if, like most people, you don’t have that natural eye for layout.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, though They finally do the identical task; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or change your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and it is better than a few dedicated alternatives *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the fundamental building blocks, you can use elements like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all three form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite actually offers a Decent pair of form building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there’s a whole lot to cover here.
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then put on your site to show it on particular pages.
Despite starting off super fundamental, the form designer lets you To customize everything from the form style, fields, background, title, input fields and, of course, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To visualize your copy in real time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there’s more to a form than simply its appearance.

So that’s an Summary of the Embedded form but like I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.

Considering paid programs such as Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to see this level of control over popup forms.
And, like before, you can play the styling options to get it Matched with your own branding.
Finally, you can Select the close Behavior of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have both.
That is really where most email Marketing platforms will render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you special coverage for this campaign.
This is where you’ll discover a few more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying surroundings, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into different areas of the report to get a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.

Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and most will get the available data more than sufficient to fulfill their needs.
What’s email marketing without a dashboard of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The great news? If you have used a visual workflow builder, then You’ll immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and simple to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for every email marketing program.
After setting your trigger, you can begin adding steps to your workflow.
These steps can be anything from sending an email, adding a Delay, a bubble break, or an act, like moving a subscriber or upgrading their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within seven days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite should have no trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign since it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.)
For example, there’s currently no automation for transferring Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these activities can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into various groups that activate new automation workflows. It is just not as efficient…. yet.
Another question of efficiency here is when generating new mails From the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your topic line that then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the critique.
This time, however, as Soon as You’ve established your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you straight back into the automations workflow rather than the usual sending options.
Finally, your email address will be Loaded into your own automation.
A Wonderful touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation cube, which means it’s possible to get an idea of what it contains at a glimpse.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on paper, it is really much quicker than what I am used to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, you’ll likely find that this downgrade in performance.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there is one type of automation You will not find in MailerLite, and I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or measure ) based on the way Subscribers interact with all the webpages on your website.
This Sort of behavioral targeting only is not accessible MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or plan to use, you might want to skip this one. Mailerlite Learning
The cost of MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the tools largest Selling points, and let us face it, most of us love a good deal.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) to get up to 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your emails using this plan, it is still an wonderful alternative for those starting out.
And what about the premium plans?
It ends up, at around half the Price of the rivalry generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the cheapest options available on the industry. Plus, if you’re ready to pay yearly, you are also able to get a much better discount.
In fact, I haven’t been able to locate anything that does exactly the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among those email advertising tools The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of decades, which is no easy feat.
While it’s not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
All in all, I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and all at a price point you will seriously struggle to conquer.
