When I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what would you say? Mailerlite
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online industries now, email advertising has been Dominated by the same large players for the last decade. Which means they get encouraged very deeply and accomplish a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the marketplace, causing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So now, in this short article, I will be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it really stands its own ground against the big boys…
…and, more importantly, whether youshould consider making the change.

Like most email advertising providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the software.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your company name, website, Business, address, business size, list size and also the type of content you plan to send.
Then, you need to confirm your Website (or domain ).
This is still part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to this domain in order that they can email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed those Steps, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, check your Website, and determine whether you’re a fantastic fit for their service.
(Quite simply, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and perform with the attributes, but you will not be able to send anything before accepted.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
But while these steps are not perfect for getting started, it Does help stop malicious users from damaging everyone else’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to Deal with Nearly all your email advertising.
(We will get to automations soon, do not worry.)
But if it is a brand new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Create Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, such as subject line, from name and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Don’t start your broadcast email, with the option of changing the subject line and email articles.
– RSS effort: Produce a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to subscribers using your site’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few additional options, most of these will follow The exact same step-by-step procedure of a normal campaign.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click to create your campaign, you’ll be asked to Select a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can change to the Templates tab and select from one of their pre-designed email templates — which will move you to the dragn’ drop editor .
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to choose From which is somewhat on the low side, but the designs are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you’d just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Which makes customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the blocks in the sidebar to include distinct Kinds of articles to your email, such as videos, merchandise columns, and societal connections.
After making your changes, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be taken to the recipients’ choices where you can select your classes or sections.
The advanced tab also allows one To develop segment-like rules , in the event your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, before sending, then you’ll get to the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, if that’s instantly, at a set time/date, or according to your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Mailerlite
Handling Your Clients
Having granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most important facets of any email advertising software today.
Because highly personalized campaigns are necessary if You’re looking to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”tag” subscribers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you start up your subscriber dash, you’ll see two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically principles.
Your readers belong to a section only when they fulfill the Specified principles, and are automatically added or removed accordingly.
Here’s what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can even combine Rules, as well as an alternate rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for classes, and despite the difference in title, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but finally decided against it)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are updated manually or via an Automation rule — that we will get into in a minute — and they don’t have any value besides what you actually call them.
As you start to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand At which Segments and Groups are typically used, however, MailerLite delivers a hand in the event you’re unsure:
Basically, groups are more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple subscribers collectively based on a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I will admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. Besides, they are discretionary.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their own fields, such as title, company, and country.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your readers along with Your custom field information in distinct columns… or can simply add these fields to a types which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I created and added to a form:
I won’t go too much into the form Things here since I have a whole section on that below, but this is the approach I’d recommend if you wished to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field data from new Subscribers, you are able to pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Customized field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it is important to understand this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it is reasonable to say MailerLite has their contributor Management and personalization features on stage. Mailerlite
If you are not impressed with what you’ve seen so far, then maybe The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, you’ll be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Is not winning any awards, it does offer a fantastic foundation to work from if, like the majority of us, you don’t have that natural eye for design.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, however They all finally do the identical job; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and it is better than some dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the fundamental building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
It will not be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Decent set of type building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there’s a lot to cover .
Let us start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to display it on specific pages.
Despite beginning super fundamental, the form designer allows you To personalize everything from the kind style, fields, background, title, input fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To visualize your copy in real time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there is more to some form than just its physical appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form works, such as adding extra fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There is a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, That can replace the embedded kind and prevents users .
Last but certainly not least, you Can assess how your form screens on mobile by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any layout changes here, but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of the Embedded form but as I said before, you can also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of this installation Procedure is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive selection, they do provide a fantastic base to work from and the editor is at least as simple to use for this form type.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template requires me to a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new choices under form types Now around:
Contemplating paid tools such as Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to observe this level of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can perform the styling options to get it Matched with your branding.
Finally, you can choose the near Behavior of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text choice, or have both.
This is really where most email Marketing platforms will leave you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click info, Subscriber growth, automation analytics, and kind signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you specific coverage for this effort.
This is where you’ll find a few statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying surroundings, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into individual areas of the report for a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Mail’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see how your subscribers interacted to one another.
Reports for automations are Available under the’Automations’ tab, even though I found these to be less insightful than campaign reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and many will find the available statistics more than enough to meet their demands.
What’s email advertising without a dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this particular review.
The great news? If you have ever used a visual workflow builder, then You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and simple to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for each and every email marketing software.
After setting your trigger, you can begin adding steps to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, adding a Delay, a bubble break, or an action, like transferring a subscriber or upgrading their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I set together, where readers Are unsubscribed if they don’t open my email within seven days.
There are countless Possibilities in regards to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite ought to have no trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.)
For example, there’s currently no automation for transferring Subscribers directly into a different automation.
That being said, the Majority of these actions can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into various groups that trigger new automation workflows. It’s simply much less efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficacy here is when generating new emails From the automation workflow builder.
After having an email cube to The workflow, you’ll be asked to put in your subject line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the critique.
This time, but as Soon as You’ve established your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you straight back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email address will be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, which means it’s possible to get an idea of what it contains at a glance.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on paper, it is actually much faster than what I am utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you’ll likely find this a downgrade in performance.
It’s quick enough for me, Personally, but I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there’s 1 type of automation You will not find in MailerLite, also I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or step) based on the way Subscribers interact with all the pages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting just isn’t available in MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or intend to utilize, you might want to skip this one. Mailerlite
The cost of MailerLite is undoubtedly among those tools biggest Selling points, and let us face it, most of us love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) for up to 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your mails using this program, it’s still an wonderful alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium programs?
It turns out, at around half the Price of this competition generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the least expensive options available on the market. Additionally, if you are ready to pay annually, you are also able to get a much better discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to find anything that does exactly the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among the few email marketing tools The (very crowded) sector in recent decades, and that’s no easy feat.
While it is not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
All in all, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and all at a price point you will seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking about giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you In the comments. Mailerlite
