When I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what could you say? Mailjet
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online industries now, email marketing has been Dominated by the same big players for the previous decade. Which means they get promoted very heavily and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the marketplace, causing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So today, in this short article, I’ll be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it really stands its ground against the big boys…

Like most email marketing providers Nowadays, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the software.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your company name, site, Industry, address, company size, record size and even the kind of material you intend to send.
Then, you need to verify your Website (or domain name).
This is still part of this acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is associated to that domain so they could email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Steps, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, check your Site, and ascertain whether you’re a fantastic fit for their services.
(In other words, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to use the software to make campaigns and play with the attributes, but you will not be able to send anything before accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
But while these steps are not perfect for getting started, it Does help stop unscrupulous users from hurting everybody’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to Deal with The majority of your email advertising.
(We will get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But if it’s a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always some excuse to send a more instant email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Produce Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular campaign: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Versions, such as subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not open your broadcast email, with the option of altering the subject line and email articles.
– RSS campaign: Produce a recurring campaign That sends new content to subscribers using your website’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few additional options, the Majority of these will follow The same step-by-step process of a normal effort.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click to create your campaign, you’ll be requested to Select a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can change to the Templates tab and choose from one of the pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor by default.
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to select From which is a little on the low side, however, the designs are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you’d just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I will choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Which makes customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the cubes in the sidebar to include distinct Types of articles to your email, such as videos, product columns, and societal links.
After making your adjustments, simply click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be carried to the recipients’ choices where you can select your classes or sections.
The advanced tab also allows one To build segment-like rules , in the event your targeting isn’t quite perfect.
Finally, right before sending, you’ll get into the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, whether that is instantly, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Mailjet
Handling Your Clients
Possessing granular control over your readers is arguably among The most important facets of any email advertising program today.
Because highly personalized campaigns are necessary if You’re looking to increase opens, clicks, and, most importantly, your own conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”tag” readers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different approach.
When you open up your subscriber dash, you’ll notice two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically rules.
Your subscribers belong to a section only when they meet the Specified principles, and will be automatically inserted or removed so.
Here’s what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice how you can even combine Principles, as well as an alternate rule if the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for groups, and despite the difference in name, These behave much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but finally decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or via an Automation rule — which we will get into in a minute — and they don’t have any value besides what you actually call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll Start to understand At which Segments and Groups are generally used, however, MailerLite delivers a hand in case you’re uncertain:
Basically, groups are more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments allow you to bulge multiple contributors together according to a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. In any case, they’re discretionary.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their particular fields, such as name, company, and nation.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers together with Your custom field data in distinct columns… or can easily add these fields to your types which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I created and added to a form:
I won’t go too much to the form Stuff here because I have an entire section on this below, but this is the strategy I would recommend if you wished to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve collected your custom field information from new Readers, you are able to pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Customized field.
I am barely scraping the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it is important to know this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to say MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on point. Mailjet
If you’re not impressed by what you have seen up to Now, then maybe The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, then you will be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Is not winning any awards, it does offer a fantastic foundation to work from if, for example the majority of us, you don’t have that natural eye for design.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, however They all finally do the same job; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further construct or change your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual site builders, and this is already better than a few dedicated solutions *Infection * WPBakery.
Together with the fundamental building blocks, you can use components like Hero segments, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
No, it won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Adequate pair of type building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there’s a whole lot to cover here.
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to display it on specific pages.
Despite starting off super basic, the form designer allows you To customize everything in the kind style, fields, background, name, enter fields and, of course, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which gives you a chance To envision your own copy in real time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there is more to some form than simply its appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form functions, including adding extra fields and setting a custom success page.
(There is a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And talking of the success page…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, That will replace the embedded kind also prevents users .
Last but surely not least, you Can check the way your form displays on mobile by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any layout changes here, but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of the Embedded form but like I said before, you can even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this installation Procedure is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do provide a fantastic foundation to work from and the editor is at least as easy to use with this form type.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template requires me to a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new choices under form types Now around:
Considering paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this level of control over popup types.
And, like before, you can perform with the styling options to get it Matched up with your branding.
Finally, you can choose the close Behaviour of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text choice, or have both.
That is where most email Marketing platforms would leave you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Data in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and kind signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you specific coverage for this effort.
This is where you’ll find a few statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into different areas of the report for a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Mail’ tab also displays a click map, so It’s possible to see your readers interacted with your mails in relation to one another.
Reports for automations are also Available under the’Automations’ tab, even although I found these to be less enlightening than effort reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and many will find the available statistics more than enough to fulfill their demands.
What’s email marketing with no dash of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The great news? If you’ve used a visual workflow builder, You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, The automations interface is easy, clean and simple to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for each and every email advertising program.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a bubble break, or an act, such as moving a subscriber or upgrading their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities in regards to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite should have no trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign since it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.. )
For example, there’s currently no automation for transferring Readers directly into a different automation.
That being said, most of these actions can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into different classes that trigger new automation workflows. It’s just much less effective…. yet.
Another matter of efficacy here is when generating new mails From the automation workflow builder.
After having an email block to The workflow, you will be asked to add your subject line that then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the review.
This time, but as Soon as You’ve established your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you straight back into the automations workflow rather than the usual sending alternatives.
Finally, your email address will probably be Loaded into your automation.
A Wonderful touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, which means you can get an idea about what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on paper, it is really much faster than what I am utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you’ll likely find this a downgrade in functionality.
It is quick enough for me, Personally, however I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there is one type of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and I think it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on the way Subscribers interact with the pages on your website.
This kind of behavioral targeting just isn’t available in MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or plan to utilize, you might want to skip this one. Mailjet
The Price of MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the tools largest Selling points, and let’s face it, we all love a fantastic deal.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) to get up to 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding in your emails using this plan, it is still an amazing alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the top plans?
It turns out, at approximately half the Cost of this competition on average, MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the cheapest options available on the market. Plus, if you are willing to pay yearly, you are also able to get a much greater discount.
In fact, I haven’t been able to find anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of the few marketing tools The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of years, which is no easy feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you will seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking of giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you In the comments. Mailjet
