When I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what could you say? Powermailer
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online industries now, email advertising has been Dominated by the identical large players for the previous ten years. Which means they get promoted very heavily and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the marketplace, inducing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So today, in this review, I’ll be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to find out if it stands its ground against the big boys…
…and, what’s more, whether youshould consider making the switch.

Like most email marketing providers Nowadays, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, site, Industry, address, business size, list size and even the kind of material you intend to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Site (or domain ).
This is still part of the approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to this domain in order that they can email you a verification link.
Once you’ve completed those Measures, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, check your Website, and ascertain whether you are a good match for their service.
(Quite simply, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to use the software to make campaigns and play with the attributes, but you will not be able to send anything until approved.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
But while these measures aren’t ideal for getting started, it Does help prevent unscrupulous users from hurting everybody’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to Deal with Nearly all your email advertising.
(We’ll get to automations soon, don’t worry.)
But if it’s a new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Create Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular effort: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Versions, such as subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to subscribers who Don’t open your broadcast email, with the choice of changing the subject line and email content.
– RSS effort: Produce a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to readers using your website’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few additional choices, most of these will follow Exactly the same step-by-step procedure of a standard campaign.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click to create your campaign, you’ll be requested to Pick a favorite editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can change to the Templates tab and select from one of their pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor by default.
In the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to choose From which is somewhat on the low side, but the layouts are super modern.
And, of course, if you’d just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I’ll select the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to use, Which makes customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the blocks in the sidebar to include distinct Types of articles to your email, including videos, merchandise columns, and societal links.
After making your changes, just click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be taken to the recipients’ choices where you are able to select your groups or segments.
The advanced tab also allows one To build segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, before sending, then you’ll get to the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, if that is instantly, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Powermailer
Managing Your Clients
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most essential facets of any email advertising software today.
Because highly personalized efforts Are Essential if You’re searching to increase clicks, opens, and, most importantly, your own conversions.
And while most providers allow you to”label” readers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different approach.
When you open up your subscriber dash, you’ll notice two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically rules.
Your subscribers belong to a section only when they meet the Specified rules, and will be automatically added or removed so.
Here’s what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can even combine Rules, as well as another rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for classes, and also the difference in name, These act much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are updated manually or through an Automation rule — which we will get into in a minute — and they don’t have any value besides what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll Start to understand At which Segments and Groups are typically used, but MailerLite delivers a hand in case you’re uncertain:
Fundamentally, groups are more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments permit you to bulge multiple subscribers collectively according to a common denominator.
A tad confusing, I will admit… but I believe it’s a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. In any case, they are optional.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their particular areas, such as name, business, and nation.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers along with Your custom field data in separate columns… or may easily add these fields to your types which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I created and added to a form:
I won’t go too much into the form Stuff here since I have an entire section on this below, but this is the strategy I’d recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, as Soon as You’ve gathered your custom field information from fresh Readers, you can pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Customized field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it’s important to know this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it is reasonable to say MailerLite has their contributor Management and personalization features on stage. Powermailer
If you are not impressed with what you have seen up to Now, then maybe The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Is not winning any awards, but it does offer a great base to work from if, like the majority people, you don’t have that pure eye for layout.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, however They finally do the identical task; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual site builders, and this is better than a few dedicated alternatives *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the basic building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all three form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite really offers a Decent set of type building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there’s a whole lot to cover .
Let us start with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to display it on specific pages.
Despite beginning super basic, the form designer allows you To customize everything from the form style, fields, background, title, input fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which Provides you a Opportunity To envision your own backup in real-time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there’s more to some form than just its appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure how the Form functions, including adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There’s a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And talking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, That can replace the embedded kind and prevents users .
Last but certainly not least, you Can check how your form displays on cellular by switching the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes here, but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of the Embedded form but as I said before, you can also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of the installation Procedure is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive selection, they do offer a fantastic base to work from and the editor is at least as easy to use with this form kind.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template requires me to a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new options under form types This time around:
Contemplating paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this level of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can perform the styling options to get it Matched up with your own branding.
Last, you can choose the near Behavior of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text option, or have both.
That is where most email Marketing platforms will render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click data, Subscriber development, automation analytics, and form signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you special coverage for this campaign.
This is where you’ll discover a few statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into different areas of this report to get a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Email’ tab also displays a click map, so It’s possible to see your subscribers interacted with your emails in relation to another.
Reports for automations are Available under the’Automations’ tab, even although I found to be less enlightening than campaign reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and most will get the available data more than enough to meet their needs.
What is email advertising with no dashboard of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this review.
The great news? If you’ve ever used a visual workflow builder, then You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, The automations interface is easy, clean and easy to navigate — something which certainly can not be said for each and every email advertising program.
After establishing your trigger, you can begin adding steps to your workflow.
These steps can be anything from sending an email, adding a Delay, a conditional split, or an action, like transferring a subscriber or upgrading their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are innumerable Possibilities in regards to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign since it lacks a number of the conditional elements. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.. )
For example, there’s currently no automation for moving Readers directly into another automation.
That being said, the Majority of these activities can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into different groups that activate new automation workflows. It’s just much less effective…. yet.
Another matter of efficiency here is when generating new mails From the automation workflow builder.
After having an email block to The workflow, you will be asked to add your subject line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the review.
This time, but once you’ve established your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you back to the automations workflow rather than the usual sending options.
Finally, your email will be Loaded into your automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation cube, which means it’s possible to find an idea of what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on paper, it is really much quicker than what I am utilized to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, you will probably find that this downgrade in performance.
It’s fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there is 1 type of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, also that I think that it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or measure ) based on how Readers interact with all the webpages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting only isn’t accessible MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or plan to use, you might want to skip this one. Powermailer
The cost of MailerLite is one of those tools biggest Selling points, and let us face it, we all love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding on your mails using this program, it is still an amazing alternative for those starting out.
And what about the top plans?
It ends up, at approximately half the Price of this rivalry generally, MailerLite is by far among the least expensive options available on the market. Additionally, if you’re ready to pay annually, you are also able to get a much better discount.
In Reality, I have not been able to locate anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among the email marketing tools to interrupt The (very crowded) sector in the last couple of decades, which is no easy feat.
While it is not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you will seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking about giving it a spin? Let us know how it works for you In the remarks. Powermailer
