When I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what would you say? Sendblaster
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online businesses now, email advertising has been Dominated by the same large players for the previous ten years. Which means they get promoted very heavily and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the marketplace, inducing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So now, in this review, I’ll be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it stands its own ground against the big boys…
…and, what’s more, whether youshould consider making the switch.

Like most email advertising providers Nowadays, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the software.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information like your company name, website, Industry, address, business size, list size and also the kind of content you intend to send.
Then, You Have to confirm your Site (or domain ).
This remains part of the acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to that domain so they could email you a verification link.
Once you’ve completed these Steps, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, assess your Site, and determine whether you are a good match for their services.
(Quite simply, they are making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and play with the attributes, but you will not have the ability to send anything before accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these measures aren’t perfect for getting started, it Does help stop malicious users from damaging everyone else’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to Deal with The majority of your email marketing.
(We will get to automations soon, don’t worry.)
But if it is a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Produce Campaign’ will give you several options.
– Regular effort: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, including subject line, from name and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Don’t open your broadcast email, with the option of changing the subject line and email content.
– RSS effort: Create a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to subscribers using your website’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few added choices, most of these will follow The exact same step-by-step process of a normal effort.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click to create your campaign, you’ll be requested to Pick a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can switch to the Templates tab and choose from one of their pre-designed email templates — that will move you into the dragn’ drop editor by default.
In the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to choose From which is a little on the low side, but the designs are super modern.
And, of course, if you would just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I will select the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to use, Which makes viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the cubes in the sidebar to include different Types of articles to your email, including videos, product columns, and social connections.
After making your adjustments, simply click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be carried to the recipients’ options where you can select your groups or sections.
The advanced tab also allows one To develop segment-like rules , in case your targeting is not quite perfect.
Finally, before sending, then you’ll get to the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, if that is immediately, at a set time/date, or according to your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Sendblaster
Managing Your Subscribers
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most essential aspects of any email marketing program today.
Because highly personalized efforts are necessary if You are looking to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”tag” subscribers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different approach.
When you open up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially principles.
Your subscribers belong to a segment only when they fulfill the Specified rules, and will be automatically added or eliminated accordingly.
Here’s what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice how you can also combine Rules, in addition to an alternate rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for groups, and despite the difference in title, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but finally decided against it.)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are updated manually or via an Automation rule — that we will get into in a moment — and they don’t have any value aside from what you call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, however, MailerLite delivers a hand in the event you’re unsure:
Fundamentally, groups are much more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments allow you to bulge multiple contributors collectively based on a common denominator.
A tad confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. In any case, they are optional.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own areas, such as title, company, and country.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your subscribers along with Your custom field information in distinct columns… or can easily add these fields to your types which will only apply to prospective readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added to a form:
I won’t go too much to the form Stuff here because I have an entire section on that below, but this is the approach I’d recommend if you wished to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve collected your custom field information from fresh Readers, you can pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Customized field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it’s important to understand that this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it’s fair to say MailerLite has their subscriber Direction and personalization features on stage. Sendblaster
If you’re not impressed with what you’ve seen so far, then maybe The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, you’ll be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Isn’t winning any awards, it will offer a great base to work from if, for example the majority of us, you don’t have that pure eye for layout.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, however They all finally do the identical job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further construct or change your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual page builders, and it is better than some dedicated alternatives *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the basic building blocks, you can use components like Hero segments, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all three kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite really offers a Adequate set of type building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there is a lot to cover .
Let us start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then put on your website to show it on specific pages.
Despite starting off super fundamental, the form designer allows you To personalize everything from the form style, fields, background, name, input fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which gives you a chance To envision your own backup in real time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there is more to a form than just its physical appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure how the Form functions, such as adding extra fields and setting a custom success page.
(There’s a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And talking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, That will replace the embedded kind also prevents users from redirecting.
Last but certainly not least, you Can assess the way your form displays on mobile by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any layout changes here, but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that’s an Summary of the Embedded form but as I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this installation process is identical, there are A few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive selection, they do provide a fantastic foundation to work from and the editor is just as easy to use with this form kind.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template takes me into a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new choices under form types This time around:
Considering paid programs such as Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to observe this amount of control over popup forms.
And, like before, you can perform the styling options to get it Matched up with your own branding.
Last, you can Select the near Behavior of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text choice, or have both.
This is where most email Marketing platforms will render you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Statistics in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber development, automation stats, and form signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you special reporting for that campaign.
This is where you’ll find some statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying environment, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into different areas of the report for a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Mail’ tab also displays a click map, so It’s possible to see your readers interacted with your mails compared to another.
Reports for automations are also Available under the’Automations’ tab, even although I found to be less enlightening than campaign reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and many will get the available data more than enough to fulfill their needs.
What’s email advertising without a dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this particular review.
The great news? If you’ve ever used a visual workflow builder, You will instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and simple to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for every email advertising program.
After establishing your trigger, you can begin adding steps to your workflow.
These measures could be anything from sending an email, including a Postpone, a bubble break, or an act, like transferring a subscriber or upgrading their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I set together, where readers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within 7 days.
There are innumerable Possibilities in regards to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite ought to not have any trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional components. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.)
For example, there’s currently no automation for moving Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, the Majority of these actions can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into various groups that activate new automation workflows. It’s just not as efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficacy here is when creating new mails From the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email block to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your subject line which then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the review.
This time, but as Soon as You’ve created your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you straight back to the automations workflow rather than the usual sending options.
Finally, your email will be Loaded into your automation.
A nice touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation block, which means you can find an concept about what it contains at a glimpse.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on newspaper, it is really much quicker than what I am utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, you will likely find this a downgrade in functionality.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, however I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there is 1 Kind of automation You will not find in MailerLite, and that I think it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or measure ) based on the way Readers interact with all the webpages on your site.
This Sort of behavioral targeting just isn’t accessible MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or plan to use, you might want to skip this one. Sendblaster
The cost of MailerLite is one of those tools largest Selling things, and let’s face it, we all love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding in your emails using this program, it’s still an amazing option for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium plans?
It ends up, at approximately half of the Cost of this rivalry generally, MailerLite is by far one of the cheapest options available on the market. Plus, if you are willing to pay annually, you can also get a much greater discount.
In fact, I have not been able to find anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of those email advertising tools The (very crowded) sector in the last couple of years, and that’s no simple feat.
While it’s not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
All in all, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking about giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you In the remarks. Sendblaster
