Like many online businesses now, email advertising continues to be Dominated by the same big players for the last decade. Which means they get encouraged very deeply and achieve a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So today, in this review, I’ll be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to find out if it really stands its own ground against the big boys…
…and, more importantly, whether youshould consider making the change.

Like most email marketing providers these days, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the software.

And while many providers Permit You to”tag” readers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different approach.
When you start up your subscriber dash, you’ll see two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially rules.
Your readers belong to a section only when they fulfill the Specified principles, and will be automatically inserted or removed so.
Here is what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can even combine Principles, in addition to an alternate rule if the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for classes, and despite the difference in title, These behave much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are updated manually or through an Automation rule — that we will get into in a moment — and they don’t have any value aside from what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this stage, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, but MailerLite delivers a hand in case you’re uncertain:
Basically, groups are more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments permit you to lump multiple subscribers together based on a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I will admit… but I believe it’s a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. Besides, they are optional.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their particular areas, such as name, business, and nation.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers together with Your custom field information in separate columns… or can easily add these fields to your forms which will only apply to prospective readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I made and added to a form:
I will not go too much to the form Things here since I have a whole section on that below, but this is the approach I would recommend if you wished to use this attribute.
Again, once you’ve collected your custom field information from new Readers, you can pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Custom field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it’s important to know that this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it is reasonable to state MailerLite has their contributor Management and personalization features on point. Subscribermail
If you are not impressed with what you’ve seen so far, then perhaps The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, you’ll be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Is not winning any awards, it will offer a fantastic base to work from if, for example most of us, you don’t have that natural eye for layout.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, however They all finally do the same job; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further construct or change your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual site builders, and this is already better than a few dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the basic building blocks, you can use elements like Hero segments, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
No, it won’t be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all three kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite really offers a Adequate set of form building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there’s a lot to cover here.
Let us begin with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then put on your website to show it on specific pages.
Despite beginning super basic, the form designer lets you To customize everything in the form style, fields, background, name, enter fields and, of course, the button.

You won’t be able to make any design changes , but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that’s an Summary of the Embedded form but as I said before, you can also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of the setup process is identical, you will find Still a few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do provide a fantastic foundation to work from and the editor is at least as simple to use with this form kind.

Here, you’ll notice there are a few new choices under form types This time around:

This is where most email Marketing platforms will leave you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click info, Subscriber growth, automation analytics, and kind signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you special coverage for that campaign.
This is where you’ll discover some more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying environment, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into individual areas of this report to get a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.

What is email marketing without a dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The good news? If you’ve ever used a visual workflow builder, then You will instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and easy to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for each and every email advertising program.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding steps to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, including a Delay, a conditional split, or an act, like moving a subscriber or upgrading their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within 7 days.
There are innumerable Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks a number of the conditional components. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.)
For example, there’s currently no automation for transferring Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these actions can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into various groups that activate new automation workflows. It is just much less efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficacy here is when generating new emails From the automation workflow builder.
After having an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your subject line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, however, as Soon as You’ve established your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you straight back to the automations workflow rather than the usual sending options.
Ultimately, your email address will be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, which means you can get an concept of what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on newspaper, it is actually much faster than what I am used to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, you’ll probably find this a downgrade in performance.
It’s fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s 1 Kind of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and that I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on the way Readers interact with the webpages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting just isn’t available in MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or plan to use, you may want to skip this one. Subscribermail
The Price of MailerLite is undoubtedly among those tools biggest Selling things, and let us face it, we all love a good deal.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your mails using this program, it is still an wonderful option for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium programs?
It ends up, at approximately half the Price of the rivalry on average, MailerLite is by far one of the least expensive options available on the industry. Plus, if you are ready to pay annually, you can also get an even better discount.
In Reality, I have not been able to find anything that does the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among the few email marketing tools to disrupt The (very crowded) sector in the last couple of decades, and that’s no simple feat.
While it’s not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
All in all, I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
