When I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what could you say? Targetx
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online industries now, email advertising has been Dominated by the same big players for the last decade. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the marketplace, inducing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So today, in this short article, I’ll be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to find out if it stands its own ground against the big boys…
…and, what’s more, whether youshould consider making the switch.

Like most email marketing providers these days, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, site, Industry, address, business size, list size and even the kind of material you intend to send.
Then, You Have to confirm your Website (or domain name).
This remains part of the acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to that domain in order that they can email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed those Measures, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, assess your Website, and ascertain whether you’re a good match for their service.
(Quite simply, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll still be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and perform with the features, but you will not be able to send anything before approved.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these measures aren’t perfect for getting started, it Does help prevent malicious users from hurting everyone else’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to handle The majority of your email advertising.
(We will get to automations soon, do not worry.)
But whether it is a new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always some excuse to send a more immediate email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Create Campaign’ will give you several options.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Variations, such as subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not start your broadcast email, together with the choice of altering the subject line and email articles.
– RSS campaign: Produce a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your site’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few added choices, the Majority of these will follow Exactly the same step-by-step procedure of a normal campaign.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click to create your campaign, you’ll be requested to Select a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can change to the Templates tab and choose from among the pre-designed email templates — that will move you to the dragn’ drop editor .
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to choose From which is somewhat on the low side, but the layouts are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you would just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I’ll select the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Making viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the cubes in the sidebar to include distinct Types of content to your email, such as videos, product columns, and social links.
After making your adjustments, just click’Done Editing’ and you will Be taken to the recipients’ options where you are able to select your groups or segments.
The tab also allows one To build segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting is not quite perfect.
Finally, before sending, then you’ll get into the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, whether that’s immediately, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Targetx
Handling Your Subscribers
Having granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most essential aspects of any email marketing software now.
Because highly personalized efforts are necessary if You’re searching to increase clicks, opens, and, above all, your own conversions.
And while many providers allow you to”label” readers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you open up your subscriber dash, you’ll see two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically principles.
Your readers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified rules, and are automatically added or eliminated so.
Here is what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can also blend Principles, in addition to an alternate rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for groups, and despite the difference in title, These behave much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but finally decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or through an Automation principle — which we’ll get to in a minute — and they have no value aside from what you call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, but MailerLite offers a hand in the event you’re uncertain:
Basically, groups are much more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments permit you to lump multiple subscribers collectively based on a common denominator.
A tad confusing, I will admit… but I feel it’s a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. Besides, they’re optional.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their own fields, such as title, company, and nation.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers along with Your custom field data in distinct columns… or can easily add these fields to a types which will only apply to future readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added into a form:
I will not go too much to the shape Things here since I have an entire section on that below, but this is the approach I’d recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve collected your custom field data from new Readers, you can pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Customized field.
I’m barely scratching the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it’s important to understand this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it is reasonable to say MailerLite has their subscriber Direction and personalization features on stage. Targetx
If you’re not impressed by what you have seen so far, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you will be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Isn’t winning any awards, but it will offer a fantastic base to work from if, like most of us, you do not have that pure eye for design.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, however They all finally do the same job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual site builders, and it is better than some dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the basic building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
It will not be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Adequate pair of type building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there is a lot to cover .
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then put on your site to show it on specific pages.
Despite beginning super fundamental, the form designer allows you To personalize everything from the form style, subjects, background, name, input fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To visualize your copy in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there’s more to a form than just its physical appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure how the Form functions, including adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There’s even a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success page…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded form and prevents users .
Last but certainly not least, you Can assess how your form displays on mobile by switching the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any design changes , but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of the Embedded form but like I said before, you may even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of the installation process is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do offer a good base to work from and the editor is at least as simple to use for this form type.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template takes me into a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new choices under form types This time around:
Considering paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this level of control over popup forms.
And, as before, you can perform with the styling options to get it Matched with your own branding.
Finally, you can Select the close Behavior of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text choice, or have both.
That is really where most email Marketing platforms would render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Statistics in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and form signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you special reporting for this campaign.
This is where you’ll discover some more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading surroundings, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into individual areas of the report to get a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Email’ tab also displays a click map, so It’s possible to see your readers interacted with your mails compared to one another.
Reports for automations are Available under the’Automations’ tab, even although I found to be less enlightening than campaign reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and most will find the available data more than enough to fulfill their needs.
What is email marketing without a dashboard of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this particular review.
The good news? If you have used a visual workflow builder, You’ll immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and easy to navigate — something that certainly can not be said for every email advertising software.
After establishing your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These measures could be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a conditional split, or an action, like moving a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I put together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within seven days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite ought to have no trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.)
For example, there’s now no automation for moving Readers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these actions can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into different groups that activate new automation workflows. It is just much less efficient…. yet.
Another question of efficacy here is when generating new emails In the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to add your subject line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, however, as Soon as You’ve created your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you back to the automations workflow rather than the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email will be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation cube, so you can find an idea about what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on paper, it’s actually much faster than what I am used to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, you’ll probably find that this downgrade in functionality.
It’s quick enough for me, Personally, however I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there is one type of automation You will not find in MailerLite, also I think it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or measure ) based on the way Readers interact with all the webpages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting just isn’t accessible MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or intend to utilize, you might want to skip this one. Targetx
The cost of MailerLite is among the tools largest Selling things, and let’s face it, most of us love a good deal.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) for up to 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding on your mails using this program, it’s still an wonderful option for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium programs?
It turns out, at approximately half of the Cost of this rivalry on average, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the least expensive options available on the industry. Plus, if you’re willing to pay yearly, you can also get a much better discount.
In fact, I have not been able to find anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among those email marketing tools The (very crowded) sector in recent years, which is no simple feat.
While it is not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and all at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking of giving it a spin? Let us know how it works for you From the comments. Targetx
