When I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what could you say? Ymlp
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online businesses now, email advertising has been Dominated by the same large players for the previous ten years. Which means they get promoted very heavily and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So today, in this review, I will be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to find out if it really stands its ground against the big boys…
…and, more importantly, whether youshould consider making the change.

Like most email marketing providers Nowadays, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information like your organization name, website, Business, address, business size, record size and even the type of content you intend to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Site (or domain ).
This is still part of the approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is associated to this domain so they can email you a verification link.
Once you’ve completed those Steps, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, check your Website, and ascertain whether you’re a fantastic match for their service.
(In other words, they’re making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to use the software to create campaigns and play with the attributes, but you will not have the ability to send anything until approved.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these measures aren’t ideal for getting started, it Does help stop malicious users from hurting everybody’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to handle Nearly all your email advertising.
(We will get to automations soon, don’t worry.)
But whether it is a new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Create Campaign’ will provide you several options.
– Regular campaign: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, such as subject line, from title and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to subscribers who Don’t start your broadcast email, with the choice of altering the subject line and email content.
– RSS campaign: Produce a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to readers using your website’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few additional choices, the Majority of these will follow The exact same step-by-step procedure of a standard effort.
So let us walk you through it.
Once you click on to create your campaign, you’ll be requested to Pick a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can change to the Templates tab and choose from one of their pre-designed email templates — which will move you to the dragn’ drop editor by default.
At the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to select From which is a little on the low side, however, the layouts are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you’d just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I will choose the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Which makes customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the blocks in the sidebar to include distinct Kinds of content to your email, such as videos, merchandise columns, and societal connections.
After making your changes, just click’Done Editing’ and you will Be taken to the recipients’ choices where you can select your groups or segments.
The tab also allows you To develop segment-like rules , in the event your targeting isn’t quite perfect.
Finally, right before sending, then you’ll get to the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, whether that’s immediately, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Ymlp
Managing Your Clients
Having granular control over your readers is arguably among The most essential facets of any email advertising program now.
Because highly personalized efforts Are Essential if You are searching to increase clicks, opens, and, above all, your conversions.
And while many providers allow you to”label” subscribers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different approach.
When you start up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially rules.
Your readers belong to a section only when they fulfill the Specified principles, and are automatically inserted or eliminated so.
Here’s what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can even combine Rules, in addition to an alternate rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for groups, and despite the difference in name, These behave much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are updated manually or through an Automation principle — which we’ll get into in a minute — and they don’t have any value besides what you call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, but MailerLite offers a hand in case you’re unsure:
Basically, groups are more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments allow you to bulge multiple contributors collectively based on a common denominator.
A tad confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. In any case, they’re discretionary.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own fields, such as name, business, and country.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your subscribers along with Your custom field information in separate columns… or may easily add these fields to your forms which will only apply to future readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I created and added into a form:
I will not go too much to the shape Stuff here since I have a whole section on that below, but this is the approach I would recommend if you wanted to use this attribute.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field data from new Subscribers, you are able to pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Custom field.
I’m barely scratching the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it’s important to understand that this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to state MailerLite has their contributor Management and personalization features on stage. Ymlp
If you’re not impressed by what you’ve seen so far, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you’ll be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Isn’t winning any awards, it will offer a fantastic base to work from if, for example most of us, you do not have that natural eye for layout.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, though They ultimately do the same job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further construct or change your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual page builders, and it is already better than a few dedicated alternatives *Infection * WPBakery.
Along with the basic building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite really Provides a Decent set of form building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there’s a whole lot to cover here.
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to display it on specific pages.
Despite starting off super basic, the form designer lets you To personalize everything in the kind style, subjects, background, title, input fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which gives you a Opportunity To visualize your backup in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there’s more to a form than just its appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure how the Form functions, such as adding extra fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There’s a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success page…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, Which will replace the embedded form also prevents users .
Last but surely not least, you Can assess the way your form displays on cellular by switching the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes , but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that is an overview of this Embedded form but like I said before, you may even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of the installation process is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive choice, they do offer a good foundation to work from and the editor is just as simple to use with this form type.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template takes me into a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new choices under form types Now around:
Contemplating paid programs like Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to observe this amount of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can perform the styling options to get it Matched up with your own branding.
Finally, you can Select the near Behavior of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text option, or have both.
That is really where most email Marketing platforms would leave you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click info, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and form signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific reporting for that effort.
This is where you’ll find a few statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average user…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into different areas of the report to get a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Email’ tab also displays a click map, so It’s possible to see your readers interacted to another.
Reports for automations are Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, even though I found to be less insightful than effort reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and many will get the available data more than enough to meet their demands.
What’s email advertising with no dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this review.
The good news? If you have ever used a visual workflow builder, then You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and simple to navigate — something that certainly can’t be said for each and every email marketing software.
After establishing your trigger, you can begin adding measures to your workflow.
These steps could be anything from sending an email, including a Postpone, a conditional split, or an act, such as transferring a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I put together, where readers Are unsubscribed if they don’t open my email within seven days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite ought to not have any trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign since it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.)
For Instance, there’s now no automation for moving Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, the Majority of these activities can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into different classes that activate new automation workflows. It’s simply much less effective…. yet.
Another question of efficiency here is when creating new emails In the automation workflow builder.
After having an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your topic line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, however, as Soon as You’ve created your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you back to the automations workflow rather than the usual sending options.
Finally, your email address will be Loaded into your automation.
A Wonderful touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation block, so you can find an idea of what it contains at a glance.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on newspaper, it is really much faster than what I’m utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you’ll probably find this a downgrade in performance.
It’s fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s one Kind of automation You will not find in MailerLite, also I think it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or measure ) based on the way Subscribers interact with all the webpages on your site.
This Sort of behavioral targeting just isn’t available in MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or plan to use, you may want to skip this one. Ymlp
The cost of MailerLite is among those tools biggest Selling points, and let us face it, we all love a good bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) for up to 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your mails using this plan, it’s still an wonderful option for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium plans?
It ends up, at around half of the Price of the rivalry generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the least expensive options on the market. Plus, if you are willing to pay annually, you can also get an even greater discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to find anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among the very few email advertising tools to disrupt The (very crowded) sector in recent years, and that’s no simple feat.
While it is not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking of giving it a spin? Let us know how it works for you In the comments. Ymlp
