When I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what could you say? Zoho
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online industries now, email marketing has been Dominated by the same big players for the last decade. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and accomplish a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the marketplace, causing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So today, in this short article, I will be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to find out whether it really stands its ground against the big boys…
…and, more importantly, whether youshould consider making the switch.

Like most email marketing providers these days, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the software.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your company name, site, Business, address, company size, list size and even the kind of material you plan to send.
Then, you need to verify your Website (or domain name).
This is still part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to this domain in order that they could email you a verification link.
Once you’ve completed these Steps, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, assess your Website, and ascertain whether you’re a good match for their services.
(In other words, they’re making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to use the software to make campaigns and play with the attributes, but you will not have the ability to send anything before accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these measures are not perfect for getting started, it Does help prevent malicious users from damaging everyone else’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to handle The majority of your email marketing.
(We’ll get to automations soon, don’t worry.)
But whether it’s a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Produce Campaign’ will give you several options.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, such as subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Don’t start your broadcast email, with the choice of altering the subject line and email articles.
– RSS campaign: Produce a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to subscribers using your site’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few added options, most of these will follow The exact same step-by-step procedure of a standard campaign.
So let us walk you through it.
Once you click to create your effort, you’ll be requested to Pick a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can switch to the Templates tab and select from among their pre-designed email templates — which will move you to the dragn’ drop editor by default.
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to choose From which is somewhat on the low side, however, the designs are super modern.
And, of course, if you would just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I will choose the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Which makes viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the cubes in the sidebar to include different Kinds of articles to your email, including videos, product columns, and social links.
After making your changes, just click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ choices where you are able to select your classes or segments.
The advanced tab also allows one To build segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, right before sending, you’ll get into the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, whether that’s instantly, at a set time/date, or according to your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Zoho
Managing Your Subscribers
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most essential facets of any email advertising software today.
Because highly personalized efforts are necessary if You are looking to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your own conversions.
And while many providers Permit You to”tag” readers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different strategy.
When you start up your subscriber dash, you’ll see two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially principles.
Your subscribers belong to a section only when they meet the Specified rules, and are automatically inserted or eliminated accordingly.
Here is what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice how you can even blend Rules, in addition to another rule if the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for groups, and also the difference in name, These act much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or via an Automation rule — that we’ll get into in a minute — and they don’t have any value besides what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, but MailerLite offers a hand in case you’re unsure:
Fundamentally, groups are more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple subscribers collectively according to a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I’ll admit… but I believe it’s a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. Besides, they’re optional.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their particular areas, such as title, business, and country.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers along with Your custom field information in separate columns… or can simply add these fields to a forms which will only apply to future readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I created and added to a form:
I will not go too much into the form Stuff here because I have an entire section on that below, but this is the approach I’d recommend if you wished to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field data from new Subscribers, you can pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Customized field.
I’m barely scratching the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it’s important that you know this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to say MailerLite has their subscriber Direction and personalization features on stage. Zoho
If you’re not impressed by what you have seen so far, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, you will be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Isn’t winning any awards, but it will offer a fantastic base to work from if, for example the majority of us, you don’t have that pure eye for layout.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, however They all ultimately do the same job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual site builders, and this is already better than a few dedicated solutions *Infection * WPBakery.
Along with the fundamental building blocks, you can use elements like Hero segments, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all three form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Adequate pair of type building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there’s a lot to cover here.
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then place on your website to show it on particular pages.
Despite beginning super basic, the form designer lets you To personalize everything in the kind style, subjects, background, title, enter fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which gives you a Opportunity To envision your own copy in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there is more to some form than just its appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure how the Form works, such as adding extra fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There’s even a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success page…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, That can replace the embedded kind and prevents users .
Last but certainly not least, you Can check the way your form displays on cellular by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes , but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that is an overview of the Embedded form but as I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of this installation process is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth selection, they do provide a fantastic base to work from and the editor is just as easy to use with this form kind.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template takes me into a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new choices under form types Now around:
Considering paid programs such as Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to see this amount of control over popup forms.
And, like before, you can play with the styling options to get it Matched up with your branding.
Finally, you can Select the near Behavior of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text option, or have .
That is where most email Marketing platforms will render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Statistics in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click info, Subscriber development, automation analytics, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific reporting for that effort.
This is where you’ll find a few more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading surroundings, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into different areas of this report for a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Mail’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see your subscribers interacted with your mails compared to another.
Reports for automations are also Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, although I found to be less insightful than campaign reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and most will find the available data more than enough to meet their needs.
What is email marketing with no dash of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this particular review.
The good news? If you have used a visual workflow builder, then You will instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, The automations interface is easy, clean and simple to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for every email advertising program.
After establishing your trigger, you can begin adding steps to your workflow.
These steps can be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a conditional split, or an act, such as moving a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I put together, where readers Are unsubscribed when they do not open my email within seven days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite ought to have no trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign since it lacks a number of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.)
For example, there’s now no automation for transferring Readers directly into a different automation.
That being said, most of these actions can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into various classes that trigger new automation workflows. It’s just much less effective…. yet.
Another matter of efficacy here is when creating new emails From the automation workflow builder.
After having an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to add your subject line which appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the review.
This time, but once you’ve created your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you back to the automations workflow rather than the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email address will probably be Loaded into your automation.
A Wonderful touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation block, so you can get an idea of what it contains at a glimpse.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on paper, it is actually much quicker than what I am used to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, you will probably find that this downgrade in performance.
It’s quick enough for me, Personally, but I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there’s one type of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, also that I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on the way Subscribers interact with all the webpages on your website.
This kind of behavioral targeting just isn’t accessible MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or intend to utilize, you might want to skip this one. Zoho
The cost of MailerLite is among the tools largest Selling things, and let’s face it, most of us love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your emails using this plan, it’s still an amazing option for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium programs?
It turns out, at approximately half of the Cost of this competition generally, MailerLite is by far one of the cheapest options on the industry. Additionally, if you are willing to pay annually, you are also able to get a much better discount.
In fact, I have not been able to find anything that does exactly the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among the few marketing tools The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of decades, and that’s no easy feat.
While it’s not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and all at a price point you will seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking about giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you From the remarks. Zoho
